The answer to this question is 100% based on the type of grass.

Creepers (bermuda, for example) should have singular divots taken spread out...polka dots. The idea is that this creeping grass will heal by itself very, very quickly during growing season if it can creep from all sides of the divot. The grounds crew, or even better the player, should fill the divots with sand (only sand) after they are made so that the ground will grow back level...but this is only necessary to get a level area and is not required for grass re-growth. My course has bermuda and our super prefers that you take a few shots from the same place (like 2 or 3 shots off the back of a divot) and then move a few inches away...trying to keep things compact, but making sure there is grass around all sides of a smallish divot.

Push ups (rye, for example) do not grow back without seed. Hence, the only factor in choosing the type of divot pattern is consideration of your next hitter. The consideration part has been covered above. My preference is taking as few divots as possible (so hitting off the back of your previous divot is preferred). At the end of each day / session the divots must be filled with a seed mix. This may not work all times of the year due to weather (too cool or too hot), but it is the only way to regrow these types of grasses. Hence, minimizing excavated space is key.
