Well no but people keep bringing up "What if he didn't pitch in the bullpen/closer" argument for his win totals. So if can be brought up and speculated, although I am sure Smoltz wishes he would have quit 2 years earlier....

Also could we speculate on Smoltz and steroids, I mean at 40 years old in 2007 he went 14-8 with a 3.11 ERA in 32 starts....
Seems many players get a pass and others who showed remarkable consistency in their late 30's and early 40's are blasted for steroid use.

If I was voting...

Randy Johnson
Pedro
Biggio
Piazza
Bagwell
Clemens
Bonds
McGwire
Sosa
Smoltz

I don't care that some of them did the roids.

I don't see how you can vote for Bonds, Clemens, and Sosa and leave off McGwire.

because McGwire was so 1 dimensional....

Bonds, Sosa, and Clemens were the best of the best at multiple facets of the game... McGwire was not a good defensive player (-12.8 WAR during his career) he did not hit for a high average (.263 career) but he drew a walk and hit home runs....

Yeah, I agree that he's the weakest case out of the bunch, but the only reason McGwire isn't in is the same reason those guys aren't in... steroids.

even if all things were fair I think McGwire would be below all of those guys and his numbers diminished because of roids.
Without much else except for his power numbers is he really a HoF or just a Hall of Good?

Um he has a career .393 OPS, pair that with elite power, thats a hell of a baseball player.

Again I said if all things were equal, Bonds and Clemens were HOF players before roids, was McGwire? Would his career have ended earlier? Idk... but he was a low BA, high walk, power guy....
Would he be more Adam Dunn? without the roids?

I just think of stacked as a bunch of 1st ballot locks. I guess 3 is pretty solid these days.

If Kevin Brown can't get in Smoltz shouldn't be first ballot (I think Kevin Brown has a strong resume as well)

Smotlz's resume is better than Brown's. Plus Brown did steroids. He'll never make the hall.

McGwire has a higher OPS+ than any HOF 1B besides Lou Gehrig & Jimmie Foxx

I don't suspect Smoltz to be clean either... hell I don't think any player from the 90's is 100% clean

Again we are looking at what he did on roids, would his career lasted as long without the steroids? Would he have hit as many home runs? We will never know but before roids I would rank him below Bonds/Clemens/Piazza still

McGwire hit 50 HRs as a skinny-arse rookie in 1987.

was a power hitter at USC as well.

so he kinda always had power
