I don't remember what happened, but I'm guessing someone died?

Has that been 15 years? I still didn't think that crash looked bad enough to kill someone. You never know.

Wasn't it some safety tech inside the car that basically hanged him?

So are we going to get some context for the photo or are we just going to leave the OP incomplete?

Damn seat belt

For an Earnhardt fan, that day still doesn't seem real. Definitely didn't leave the race thinking "I hope he's still alive."

I was at an XFL game in Birmingham when I found out. Everyone was talking about it after the game.

Go watch his last win in the 2000 Winston 500 and STFU. He drove from 18th to 1st in three laps with a beat up car. The sport hasn't been close to being as popular since the day he died.

You're probably trolling but whatever.

The legendary Dale Earnhardt died 15 years ago today in a freak accident crash in turn 4 on the final lap of the Daytona 500. Earnhardt was running in 3rd place, trying to block Ken Schrader and Sterling Marlin which allowed Michael Waltrip to win his first ever race. Young Dale Earnhardt Jr finished in 2nd place.

Didn't he resist using some of the devices that might have saved his life?

And whined when someone did the same to him.

He wore an open faced helmet and didn't use the HANS device. NASCAR changed the rules the next week requiring all drivers wear it.

I remember Waltrip screaming for Mikey then at the very end saying I hope Dale's okay and then all of sudden getting quiet. Like he knew that hit was bad.

I'm not a nascar expert but I believe that is correct. The safety equipment of that time, specifically the the neck harness, was not mandatory and Earnhardt never wore one. They say his death would've been prevented had he been using one.

Its crazy how that was the wreck that fatally injured the Intimidator. He was involved in some absolutely brutal crashes at Daytona throughout his career and always walked away. His last crash looked tame compared to most.

I thought also the full face helmet would have helped as the steering wheel is what his head hit.

They changed the rule for full face the next year. The HANS was month or so later, I believe. Harvick's win in Atlanta was huge for the sport also, especially with Gordon chasing him down.
