re: your "system" for tracking your budget

The real way to do this is to make enough money that you don't need to track your personal expenses.
I appreciate the OT style post, but to that point I have learned one amazing thing. There is no such thing as rich, there are only levels of poverty. I make almost double what I started out making after graduating, but I somehow feel less wealthy now than I did back then. It is because of 2 things:
1) You get used to spending money. When I started my job, I was used to living off of my part time $15 an hour job. Making the jump from ~15,000 a year to having a full time salary with benefits was a quantum leap. I was able to eat out whenever I wanted and I could afford decent wine. It was awesome. Getting a 12-15% raise now doesn't even change my lifestyle at this point. not to mention the government taking ~40% of every incremental dollar I earn instead of taking somewhere in the mid teens from that first jump.
2) Your peer group changes. If I could have seen my current lifestyle as an analyst, I would be very impressed. Now, I just feel like I am scraping by because I'm one of the poorest people in my friend group CFO/CEO types of income.
I had a friend who was talking about how someone gave them use of their yacht to go on his honeymoon. He said he was blown away when they saw it (it had a full time crew of 5), but the owner warned him that he would be one of the least expensive boats in the marina and then lamented that he didn't have Saudi sheik level wealth. Wrap your mind around that. Billionaires still feel poor.

"Did you know that the first Matrix was designed to be a perfect human world where none suffered, where everyone would be happy? It was a disaster. No one would accept the program. Entire crops were lost. Some believed that we lacked the programming language to describe your "perfect world". But I believe that, as a species human beings define their reality through misery and suffering. So the perfect world was a dream that your primitive cerebrum kept trying to wake from. "

Agree with all of that. If someone told me five years ago that I'd be making what I do now in five years I would that thought I'd be set. Now I feel no different than when I made 1/3 of what I do today

A study came out a few years ago that pretty much every dollar more you made made you happier... until you hit 75k. Beyond that, it just didn't have much of an effect. I'm sure it varies by person, but it's still an interesting perspective.

I use this spreadsheet to track expenses.

I have used excel for about 12 years. It is an interesting financial history for myself.
I'd be down for switching to mint based on things I've heard. My concern is that I have a german bank account, and most purchases are by wiring money, so it doesn't always look clear what the purchase was for. I also deal in multiple currencies.
Can it manage all that? Otherwise, I'm still using excel.

It doesn't take long to just set up a mint account. You could set one up and see what it looks like before you do all of the fine tuning (80% of the work).

I use Mint for personal finances
Quickbooks for business
I write all transactions in my note pad too, because thats how I started out before computer software.

I just looked into Mint based on this thread...
Just when I was getting excited!

unfortunately Mint currently only supports financial institutions in the US and Canada. There are no known plans to expand to banks in other countries in the near future.

There are some other comparable sites that are pay sites. They don't cost very much, so they might be worth giving a shot.

I use excel as well. Meticulously keeping up with it. I update/check it 4 days a week. Extremely easy. I also felt Mint categorized things weirdly. I may start using Mint again to compliment my spreadsheet. I just like the set up of it..
