Yeah no kidding. I have a friend that runs a small retail shop, she pays her main person $15/hr and the lady can't operate the cash register.

I asked why she can't find someone else, and her response was this is the 3rd someone else.

Not trying to be harsh, but the "why" in your question was answered by the word "constantly" and the fact that this person is still employed there. Until there is some sort of (meaningful) corrective action on your part, I wouldn't expect to see any sort of improvement.

The real answer is

quote:

she pays her main person $15/hr

Someone who actually is competent won't stick around long for $15/hr.

We are on our 4th bookkeeper/AP person this year. The first girl we fired because she was lazy and was booking thing all kinds of fricked up, bills weren't getting paid, etc. Since then, it's been tough to fill the position. I'm not sure what it pays, but I'm sure it's at least competitive.

Take this guys offer of automation.

I run a project for an owner and the owner assigned us a accountant as a trial for large capex( it's awesome to have him in my team).

He is young, but clearly a great employee. Since the project is not full time they asked him to help the onsite plant accountants. He had to fix a ton of stuff and clean up their mess weekly.

At this point he has automated a large portion of what they do and they are waiting for the people to retire now. They will eventually replace the 3 onsite with 1 remote and now it's correct and quicker.

I've already done some automating with their processes. Pretty much low hanging fruit but automated the voucher process, journal entries online classifying of the corporate card accounts (so that we can focus more on analysis and projections and catching errors faster) and streamlining the billing process. Trying to eliminate as much paper as I can. We were operating like a 10 person office did in 1999.

And we didn't re-hire after the accounting assistant left. There was no need for that position after streamlining some things and figuring out the billing person had a ton of capacity.

There is too much tolerance for incompetence. When you're being paid 65 k for an "easy" job, you should be absolutely flawless. Your company could hire an ambitious, high achieving recent grad for 40 k who will have the job perfected within 3 months.

There are people in my company with high school educations who have been grandfathered in for jobs requiring a Master's now and they're generally pretty incompetent.

Then your turnover is high because they leave after 6 months because their ambitious. You want someone in that type of position thats competent and capable, but someone who isn't necessarily looking for the next spot. That's our struggle.

Sounds like you're a solid crystal report/sql script away. to print exceptions or check for balancing of the books. Or depending on system flexibility add some validation requiring some balancing to at least prevent the super stupid mistakes.

Do you have a report builder or database access to the system?

This is actually the part of my job that I enjoy but never get to do anymore.

Any of you consulting baws in the Dallas area? We're about to revamp our reporting packages and will likely be doing some outsourcing for some automation and report writing.

In general, I find that feds are either a waste of time and money or are really good and underpaid. Not many in between.

State government as well. They overpay low-level positions and underpay high-level positions.
