Why is so hard to be semi competent?

I'm not trying to be rude here. We have this person who has been here for 20+ years and should know the system inside and out. They constantly book revenue inconsistently. These are all similar type transactions. All you have to do is take a little time, use your brain and research how things should be booked or how a similar type of transaction was booked recently. That's what I did to find the errors. The shite is all linked and if you use different codes, it's going to go to different GL accounts. I've already had this conversation multiple times. It's just not this hard. I found one mistake ($732k) and then went back and found another ($119k). I'm either getting played (they play dumb when I ask questions) or they are just incompetent.

They are here 40 hours a week but probably is only about 30 hours per week of work from what I can tell.

I'll do it for $45k if I can telecommute.

You don't have to move to Brentwood but need to be able to commute to downtown Nashville. I mean this person has had their exact retirement date written down for 8 years now.

Preds season tickets don't cost that much. LOL, I'll let you know if anything comes of this.

It's a smokescreen. They're embezzling.

Unlikely. I've got cash on total lock down and have multiple checks in place which is how I found this latest debacle. Unless they have a fake vendor setup and are billing clients who aren't questioning the expenses, it's not likely. Someone else does the new vendor setups, W-9 verifications and payables. I'm not releasing payment to anybody unless they send us a current W-9 from a company email address or have a SSN.

What's the labor market like there? If it's a hard market, just wait it out until the next economic downturn and hire someone else. Start documenting now. You need to counsel him, document it, give him a chance to improve, make sure he isn't in one of the protected classes etc. Probably better discuss with both your attorney, insurance and risk management vendor.
Or if you don't want to do that you'd better start working towards his strengths, and doing his work for him, all the while signing his paycheck. I had to do exactly this when someone applied overstating her experience, and when I started the process, all of the sudden she suffered from chronic depression and something else that made her virtually impossible to fire. All last summer. Hardly any golf, and paying her for the pleasure.
But the quicker one learns even the best employee doesn't care about your business half as much as you do, the quicker the quality of your life will improve. And the quicker you learn that one of the most important functions of being an employer is to be extremely diligent in the hiring process, the happier you will be.
I feel your pain. I had to log in to my office every night last summer to double check work. Rarely was I done before 7PM, and on the few occasions I felt I could go play gold, I was so burnt out, I didn't feel like it. I had to monitor emails. I really couldn't monitor telephone calls. I prevented several potential lawsuits due to her faulty work. I had to balance the well being of the existing employees, who also had to do her work, and make sure I didn't lose another employee. It was virtually impossible to hire around here. But when you own it, and a large percentage of your net worth is predicated on the sale value of your business, you gotta do it.
eta. I've had to fire three people in 23 years. None of these were easy. We're smaller, so I'm HR, IT, all the other crap that goes along with keeping expenses low, so my distribution remained high. It's a professional office with licensing required, so it is even more difficult as the bad employees know precisely how to game the system.

Just wait until you meet the typical federal data entry clerk. The job doesn't pay all that well but they're still overpaid.
In general, I find that feds are either a waste of time and money or are really good and underpaid. Not many in between.

I'll take 70k for a year but within the year I'll automate the position almost entirely. So you'll be down 5k for the year and up 60k next year when I go back to consulting.
