Always look online and find the same or similar mattress online before buying at mattress firm. I got ~40% off on a purchase recently with a price match and then beating it by 10%. I was in and out within 15 minutes with delivery within 4 hours.

Even with such a large discount I don't doubt they still turned a profit. And don't underestimate how much they make on the pillows and mattress protectors they push so hard during checking out.

That's a fact jack! Nawlins to the core.

15 years ago, Conan O'Brien wasn't aired until late and that guy was a huge advertiser so Conan produced a commercial for him.

Having trouble with a link because my work browser won't let me access sites like yahoo answers or quora, but I'm seeing an average of 34-35 million mattresses are sold each year while last year ~7.7 million cars were sold- both in the US.

Units sold/year isn't necessarily exactly what we're discussing, but it's a pretty good indication of which is replaced more frequently imo.

Ehhh. It's probably pretty close to normal. Just going off of personal experience, I've definitely driven 3 vehicles since in the lifespan of my last mattress (only one was owned purely during the life of that mattress and the others overlapped). I don't know anyone rushing to get a new mattress every 8 years (highly exaggerated number to replace your mattress, even had mattress stores tell me that). Yet most people get tired of their cars and after they are paid off in 5 years or so, they have that extra money in their pocket and they end up getting another. I'd say it's pretty dead on, not abnormal.

Now regarding car dealerships being as common as mattress stores, maybe it's because Mattress Firm originated in Houston, but they are everywhere. Easily......EASILY outnumber car dealerships. And it isn't just in certain areas. I can be at a Mattress Firm in 10 minutes in pretty much any part of the Houston metro area. It's insane.

Those numbers don't really explain how often you change out a mattress. It seems you need more mattresses than you do vehicles though. think about a mattress for each kid and a spare bedroom would exceed number of vehicles needed for a family not to mention hotels rooms vs car rental. Everybody pretty much sleeps on a mattress but not everybody owns or uses a vehicle.

I guess if you include an infant's bed as a mattress, I suppose you are changing out from a baby, to kid's, to teen's, that's 3 in about a 15 year span.

Sams is a good place to check also. About a year ago we were thinking of replacing ours and found 2 Serta queen mattresses, nice pillow top ones, for $699 total. My SIL needed one as well, so we went in together on it.

You think the average mattress outlasts the average car in it's lifespan of usage?

I bought my car in 2005. I bought mattresses in 2005 and 2015. So my car lasted longer than my mattress. But it was a Honda, and a cheap mattress.

You like that mattress? I had one and it was the worst I've ever had. Had noticeable grooves where you slept after like six months and you can't flip that mattress.

Hmmm. It was some kind of dream model. I will have to look it up when I get home tonight.

How do you measure how long a mattress lasts anyway? Don't people just change them when they start to have back and neck problems?

I think the online mattress companies are going to be more and more popular (Casper, Leesa) and eventually a lot of these stores will close.

I will say this, I did buy a mattress last year it was pricey not the most expensive in the store but there were definitely mattresses that were $8-10k. I have a bad back so I figured id hear the sales pitch on them, which included "well over 50% of your life is spent in bed, so what $9500 for that". In the end it felt like every other bed and I bought one that was alot less. Still though I imagine margins are up there on matresses, and I imagine the move alot because of their financing arm.

When we replaced ours last year, there were notable spots where the springs were trying to break through, as well as some evident sinking in parts of the mattress.

I've seen these commercials where they are now saying you should replace every 8 years but I'm guessing that's just marketing.

I always hear this and just wonder if it is marketing as well. Like how the oil change places made people believe they need to change their oil every 3,000 miles. If I had to guess that 8 year time limit is BS.

Maybe, but this seems to be with the foam mattress "revolution" - a foam mattress is literally a sponge and it does not attract accumulate dust mites (or their excrement) the way and innerspring mattress does, particularly with a proper cover or encasement. But it DOES draw moisture and mold. I'm thinking 8 years is about right for a foam (unless they warranty it for longer) and 10 to 12 is for a traditional, again because of the dust mite issue.

My last mattress lasted 15 years, so I've had good luck overall.

I know mine has, and it's not even close. And it's not just how long one or the other lasts, but how long a person wants to keep one before moving on as well.

Each store only has to sell 3 or 4 mattresses to cover their cost

haha no not mattress mac his competitor, just googled it, Hilton Koch, guys a savage he used to always whip out the chainsaw and cut mattresses, really low budget commercials thats why I was shocked when I heard he paid so much to buy a WNBA team but they promptly went bankrupt next year.

Here is a fun fact. It was mentioned earlier, but Hilton is from Chalmette (which probably explains a lot), but he also went to Nicholls State. He was our starting free safety. I knew him personally back then. He could be as annoying as his commercials, but I always thought he was a pretty good dude (and his sister was smoking hot).
