You have a wife and her dad is in her 40s? How old are you and how old is your wife?

Sorry for the confusion. My uncle is in his 40s.

My bad. I misread that. Long day...
I probably won't inherit a damn thing. My grandfather was loaded, but before he died his psycho wife took his kids, my mom and her siblings , off as executor and they didn't get shite when he passed.
She has control of all of his money until she dies. Here's to hoping she doesn't spend it all

Do they have a house? If they do that is anywhere from 200-500k you get right there. People often forget about that
True, could happen. I don't know for sure but my guess is that the house is paid for. However, I could definitely see them eventually using the equity in retirement.

Reverse mortgage should be a VERY last resort IMO.

$12K from a grandparent. Both of my parents are still living and if they have the same lifespan as their parents then I won't see a dime until I'm in my 70's. I have the rich uncle with no kids and I'm in his will but he is even younger than my parents are, so I'm not counting on any inheritance to help me out along the way.

Wife just got $300. We almost just picked up and moved to Hawaii right then.

$5,000
it was nice as it was unexpected. Actually I got zero, but there was a lawsuit over my grand grandmother's estate. And my father won. And he gave my sister and I each $5k.
Based on the level of a-hole he is I expect he inherited $500K+

This is something I am actually curious about. Is it standard practice when a grandparent dies for the parent to pass along part of the inheritance to the children?

My wife and I set up a trust and assets are separated so some go specifically to grandchildren. Their access to the funds are structured over time so if something were to occur sooner than later they will have to grow into it. My daughter won't have to decide how much to pass on. Then again I may live into my hundreds and then all bets are off.
ETA: we inherited nothing but contribute to parents care

My moms parents are the only ones who have passed. They were dirt poor. My mom got their roach infested house in Haleyville,AL.
My dads parents are still alive and I'll be interested to see what they leave. I imagine they have less than 20k in their checking account but I have personally helped my grandfather bury BAGS of silver and gold on family land. He also has over 20 safety deposit boxes filled with gold and silver. No idea what it could be worth.
My parents are very well off but have already sat us all down and said we are getting 100k each and the rest is going to charity and grandkids college fund. Dad is a firm believer in making your own way. I think he will change his mind as he gets older but I'm fine with it regardless. It isn't my money.

$0. I hope it stays that way. I hope my Dad dies holding on to his last dollar bill. He earned that money, and the values and discipline he instilled in me is worth more than any inheritance he could leaves.

This times a million.
If my dad is 100% broke by the time he dies I'll be proud as hell. It will suck for me but he worked his arse of for that money.

Got 15K from grandmother that is still alive, so maybe not inheritance technically but she said that she would rather see it used while she was alive.

I have a friend who's wife got $200,000 from an uncle. They paid all credit card debt and then 50% of a new house. Was very cool for them because they were living paycheck to paycheck. Might be again for all I know.

$0
I told my parents to spend it like it's stolen.

My parents began to pass their estate some years ago, Dad is still alive. They gave the three of us (children), the grandchildren (7), and the great grandchildren (10) shares of blue chip stocks they acquired over the years...thought it to have been stroke of genius on their part. I'm sure there to be some further as Dad stil has assets but don't concern myself with it. My wife has received some small royalty amounts as her Dad was an independent geologist
