Working for an oil company, I hate to invest in them as its putting all my eggs in one basket. But BP is damn attractive below $40. I get the ton of risk from the various law suits but damn... A 5 P/E for an oil stock is crazy.

What are yall's thoughts on purchasing some BP? Super tempting at less than $40 a share. I just can't imagine that it won't recover back to the $50 range, at least.

Lots of discussion in this thread about BP, and there's another thread not too far down called "Lets talk about BP" or something like that.

Let it drop further. They're about to have lay offs and oil will likely drop further.

That's been my stance for the past week or so. I've been wanting to get in to the market but am waiting until the end of the year/beginning of January to see what happens with the price of oil.

With today's prices, I'd rank CVX and RDS-B higher than BP for companies Id buy. If COP falls to $64, they jump in front of BP too. I'm strictly talking from a long term dividend reinvest strategy

Eta- I think the BP upside is higher than all of them, but also the most risk.

Something I posted two months ago

quote:

From everything I've read, I should be able to wait until the end of November to choose an oil company to start dripping.

currently eyeing all of these... (my buy price in parenthesis)

COP: Friday's close, 70.36; my buy price, (under $63)
XOM: 91.60 ($83)
CVX: 113.89 ($105)
RDS-B: 72.85 ($62)
TOT: 56.45 ($48)
VLO: 45.15 ($42--low dividend*)
BP: 41.54 ($32)
PSX: 76.32 ($60--low dividend*)
Others--
MRO and MPC...not sold on MRO yet. Any long term potential here or too much risk?

I'd say CVX, COP, and RDS all have a decent chance of reaching what I'd hoped they would reach. MRO has dropped about 25% in two months.

Any arguments against buying Murphy Oil (MUR)? Its 2 dollars away from a five year low...Not flashy, but seems solid to me.

Edit: MUR is at $46.15 with a 3.03% dividend

I think it reached 37 not too long ago. That could happen again.

How low does big oil go? (XOM, CVX)

If oil drops through December, could we see XOM at 80 and CVX at 95?

It appears that we could see 80 and 95.

By the way, I've got a new idea. Save 3k and buy VGENX within my Roth. Oil should still be down by that time (I hope).

It could get back to Deepwater Horizon levels of ~$27 if it keeps this up. Will be interesting to watch
