The January payment date is the one I always have a difficult time remembering. Last chance to avoid % and penalties for under-withholding/paying for 2014 tax year.

I fricking hate taxes. Especially the bullshite progressive tax system we have. "The Success Penalty"- I understand paying taxes to support the system that allows me to make my money, but frick paying an escalating percent and losing all my damn deductions. Oh well...guess I'll be writing my check to support a village of welfkins and their deadbeat arse parents.

I would be okay if I felt like we spent tax money appropriately.

I have, unfortunately, overpaid in a large way. Silver lining is that I'll get to skip this one.

So who is required to do this? Anyone who may owe for not paying enough in taxes in 2014? I know I'm going to owe, mainly because I sold some stock in 2014 and will need to pay taxes on the capital gains. Do I need to remit this by 1/15?

There are some "safe harbor" rules (if you've paid in more in2014 than your 2013 total FIT liability was) and I think there is no penalty if your amount due is less than $1,000.

You probably need to go to the irs' website and see for yourself if you're safe with the amount you've already paid in for 2014.

I'm not qualified to give tax advice, especially knowing so little about your tax and income situation.

But it's easy to pay an estimated amount. Just go to irs.gov, click on forms and instructions, find the Form 1040-ES (it's the form you complete that accompanies your payment check), complete the form for the 4th quarter 2014, write the check and mail both in to the address for your state. For Louisiana the address of the IRS office where we mail our estimated payments is in North Carolina.
