Got one of these speed camera fines 14 months ago. Ignored it as most do and waited for the "collections" letter that has now arrived.

In the letter it says: "If you dispute the validity of this debt or any portion thereof, you must notify this office, in writing, within 30 days. Otherwise, we assume this debt is valid and will pursue all means available for this collection. Upon receipt of your protest, we will verify the debt and provide you with a copy of such verification."

What's my next move?

- Respond with a "show me where I agreed to this debt" letter?
- Ignore it?
- Torch the speed camera?

Responding in any way gives validity that you may pay something. Best to just ignore it.

I didn't look the video because I forgot, but I'm 90% sure I took a right on red. I know you didn't added me, but that's why I didn't pay it. I didn't feel like fighting because I was afraid if they did find me guilty then I'd have to sign something.

Is it for speeding or running a red light?

How was the letter sent? Did you and/or a family member sign for receipt of letter?

First Class USPS. No communication has been certified mail or signature required.

So no proof you ever received it...

If you call them, you are acknowledging and like others side, giving them fuel to run with.

Its a numbers game for those pieces of shite. Theres a reason they have had to pull out of a lot of cities. Less than half of the people who receive them pay. Do you really think that all of those people's credit is getting dinged?

If something shows up on you credit, simply call the agency, dispute the hit... The agency will ask Redflex to provide a promissory note and when they can't, they will remove it.

Not necessarily. You can call them and tell them you have no idea what the letter is about and ask them to substantiate the debt.

It's best to do it via certified letter though, so you have proof.

But that said, I would just ignore it and only take action if it ends up on your credit report.

Aren't judgements and government fines legally allowed to be on a credit report?

A red light "ticket" is neither of these things.

Im not saying they'd have a case, just if you call them... They will then have your phone number and the bullshite will snowball.

Pay your damn ticket / quit speeding and running red lights.

Google Voice can act like a burner phone in such a situation, you can record your call and is a pretty useful tool otherwise too.

But I wouldn't call them, they're not going to be reasonable if they're collecting unconstitutional red light tickets. Just send a first class letter asking to verify the debt and that should stop them in their tracks.
