Penalty for filing tax return late?

I really don't feel like dealing with this BS. Plus I probably overpaid so they are ahead right now.

No late filing fees if they owe you money.

You have until the 18th to have it postmarked. If you do owe, just file an extension.

If you are sure you overpaid, don't worry about it. I was in the same situation once and didn't file the return for like 3 years, the IRS had no problem holding on to my couple hundred bucks for me but was happy to pay when I asked them to.

People who have overpaid and haven't filed are the last folks to go after on the IRS's list of things to do.

The problem with not filing is the statute of limitations (time limit for the IRS being able to audit those years) does not begin until you file the return.

True, but that shouldn't be a big concern to anyone who isn't cheating on their taxes and whose returns aren't complicated.

Sorry Spidey, but the Statute for a refund is two years from the date the return is due.
