Thinking about starting to drive for Uber a few nights a week to pick up some extra money. Does anyone know how much you can make in Baton Rouge? Also, what are the requirements for cars? My car is not a pos, but it is just over 10 years old. Is that a problem?

Read about it, I don't know firsthand but from what I read it's a losing proposition...:bigly....yes there's cash flow but between gas inbetween trips and depreciation and wear and tear I read it's sub minimum wage. Of course most don't see that bc they don't see the depreciation and wear and tear on a daily basis. The cash flow is nice but driver turnover is super high for a reason. Again I read this all somewhere maybe it was wrong but it makes sense

Plenty of drivers post in LINK / so you might want to check that out.

Some say it's terrible on your car and doesn't pay all that well but plenty of people seem willing to do it so there's that.

I would love to see an analysis by Uber type (UberX, Black, Luxe, etc.)

The rates are so much higher on the Luxe rides that I wonder how much the economics change (considering you need a black luxury car).

I'm not going to lie that I have thought about doing it on event nights when surge pricing occurs. I could probably make $500 top line doing a couple trips if the timing is right.

Personally, if I was looking for a part-time night gig, I'd rather work retail or at a restaurant than drive for Uber for the following reasons:

1. Depreciation, wear and tear on your car from Uber
2. A consistent income that doesn't fluctuate on factors beyond your control
3. Not having to deal with some undesirable people or end up in dangerous neighborhoods

i do it from time to time. don't expect to make much unless its surging and honestly the easiest and best time to drive is on satuday and sunday mornings. From 6-10 its shackers trying to get back home and not a lot of drivers are out because of the night before so theres almost always a surge. i made 50 bucks in an hour and a half last time i did it which was two weeks ago.

I had a guy that worked for me awhile back that drove for uber as a side job He claimed to make a couple hundred between Thursday- Sunday and said he really moped up on tiger home games ( around $300) as another poster mentioned " surging" is when you make the money. The guy was a total asswipe so can't tell you for sure if he was totally honest but I did see where drivers across the nation have been complaining because the more drivers that get on the rode..uber cuts the drivers rates

A girl I work with does Uber eats and likes that as a side gig. Doesn't have to deal with anyone in her car and the pay is steady if you work the right hours

A friend of mine used Uber on an early Sunday morning in Tuscaloosa the day after Alabama played a cupcake team at home. The driver told him she travels from Birmingham to Tuscaloosa on game weekends to drive Uber. The driver told him she had made $1300 that weekend.

big city should be fine. you can only drive during " surge times" if you like. When demand is high rates go as high as 3x the normal rate, and you can set it to notify you when surges are occuring. typical slow day fares are pretty bad unless you travel distance. $20-25 for a 15 mile trip or $3.50 for a trip across the street. average trip under 5 miles off peak will be about $5-7.

ive only done about 12 trips ever. i got pretty annoyed when I dropped a girl off to " run inside" for a few minutes, it was a decent trip and she said she needed to go back, so i waited, she stood by my car and hit the trip to go back and it sent it to another driver instead of me sitting right beside her.

I don't think I would do it simply for the money. It's just not enough.

If I were single, and had some free time, I would do it because I like to drive and I think it would be interesting. It would give me something to do and in that situation, the money would only be a bonus.

I believe I read somewhere your car had to be no more than 8 years old.

I did it for a while. I wouldn't recommend it.

My car was a paid for 2013 which I had destroyed with mileage. It was the perfect vehicle. It qualified for Uber X and XL. With the old rates I was making decent money. On a good weekend I was taking in about $30 an hour after costs. When they changed the rates I did a quick calculation and figured it to be a loser, and never logged in again.

A lot of other part time drivers noticed the same thing and the quality in the Baton rouge market has gone down a great deal.

You can still be profitable if you target the hours you drive and match with demand, but it is a lot harder. Frankly with the current rate structure any part time job will be as good to you as Uber.

They keep getting more lenient on car requirements. I actually had one guy recently that was one of the biggest dumps I had ever ridden in. Felt bad for he kid because he was just trying to make some side cash but his car had trash everywhere in it.

Guy I work with was considering it, but said he'd have to get commercial insurance on his personal vehicle. Is that correct?

Birmingham has a service called Shipt, where people do your grocery shopping for you and deliver it. I've wondered how well it pays. Publix is flooded with those shoppers every Saturday and Sunday.

We've used it a few times. It's pretty handy, though making your grocery list in the app is pretty clunky.
