I'm thinking about buying a Toyota 2012/2013 Camry next year. I have always read that used cars are more cost effective.

If anyone can give some advice, I'd appreciate it.

2012 Camry

Here's an example of what I want.

Buying used can be tricky. Typically the dealer will give someone dog shite on their trade and try to sell it to you on a 10k mark up... OR... they'll pay too much on someone's trade and try to get you to eat their loss.

I try to buy new but if that's not an option, try certified or programmed options. You can really do well by taking advantage of rebates and comparing prices of TX (Houston). I normally go on TrueCar, find what is a good deal, shop prices in Houston, and tell the dealer to match or beat it or I'm going to Texas.

For what you're looking for used is going to be cheaper.

You will get raped on trade in but it's the most convenient option and you do get some tax benefit.

I've had good luck with certified pre-owned. You're basically buying an extended warranty from the manufacturer so expect to pay more. However, it is still usually significantly cheaper than buying new, even with end of the year deals.

That might not be true for TOYOTA. I've found it usually isn't worth buying late model used one vs a brand new car. A few years ago I bought my daughter a new Corolla S for $3500 more than a used one with a cheaper package with 24,000 miles. When it comes to The Big 3 "American" brands then yes you come out much better used. By the way, the Corolla is now 10 years old. She sold it to her brother. It's got around 150,000 miles. No repairs

Damn, sounds like your son got the shaft in that deal.

Sister gets brand new car for free, then the brother gets nothing and has to pay for the sisters old car?

camrys are fine cars just get gold or white exterior with tan, beige interior. regardless of how many miles you put on it while you own it, there's a location over seas where those are worth tons of money when they are about 10 years old if it's the right color scheme. Knowing that, you can get more for it when you trade it. or just look me up.

He should get whatever color car he wants. 99% of buyers are not actively selling their old cars overseas after 5+ years.

New = long term debt + extra insurance for a depreciating asset.

Used = roll of the dice

Used from someone you know well = you know exactly what you're getting.

Don't try buying a truck or SUV with that mindset.

Yeah, I learned about that after spending 6 months looking for a good used truck two years ago. Just went ahead and purchased a new one.
