Yup... I think I will eventually own a Rolex sub, but it def won't be my go-to piece.

I didn't even look at a Rolex when I was shopping, because I wanted something different and less recognizable to the average person.

Not to stir the pot (too much), but I feel like this could be said about. Rolex more than just about any other watch brand. People that just want to say 'Hey- look at me! I have an expensive watch on!' are the ones that buy Rolex. Sure, they can be a good investment and of properly cared for, can hold their value over time, but to me, a Rolex just screams 'I have more money than you do!!!

I feel that this can be said about most watches in this price point. Is the ability to keep ever so slightly more accurate time worth $10,000 (sometimes this is on the low end) to you? You are buying it because you admire the craftsmanship, not because it holds time so much better that it's worth the extra $9,000. Same reason someone buys a Ferrari. No one needs it, you admire it and once you have the money for it, you want to spend it and show it off. There's nothing wrong with it, but I just feel any watch at that price point is bought to show off status. Same as an engagement ring for a woman.

I agree with the above post. Same thing can be said for any nice car someone buys. Nothing wrong with nice things.

I'd simply never wear a watch on a bracelet. I just think it's poor style. I don't care if it's a $1k watch, a $10k watch or a $40k watch. I know most men think differently, but it to me it turns into jewelry at that point.

That's pretty much my stance on Rolex...no self respecting watch company would only sell watches on bracelets. I know you can take the oyster band off, but still it says everything I need to know about the brand.

I said this for 20 years. Until I did it one day.

I've tried on a friend's Sinn 856 tegimented with a bracelet, and even though the engineering was nice I just wouldn't wear it that way. I may buy it with the bracelet for resale, I just think it looks a helluva lot better on a strap.

I split mine about 50/50 between strap and bracelet.

Broke/Gaston, any thoughts on pulling off a dual tone on a NATO strap? I'm dying to stow away my 18k jubilee.

This is a horrible example, but the only one I could find quickly:

I'm thinking it might look better with a "worn" leather or light brown gator band of some kind.

Absolutely no on the zulu/nato. Vintage leather. Would look awesome on a Daluca strap

What is your lug measurement? It needs to be 18, 20, or 22mm to find replacement bands easily. NATO bands work well with larger faced watches, but I could see pulling of a 36mm case with one.

LINK
You'll see most of the NATO and ZULU options there.
The upshot is that you can buy a few to see what you like. I'd get a James Bond one and a couple of solid colors.

You could always buy a replacement dial and have a jeweler install it. Stow away the jubillee and the champagne face and really spice up your watch. Plenty of these watches have bit the dust and you can find almost any dial you want. Just a random suggestion.

Then you could rock a ton of strap options.

I think this looks sharp.

Just off the top of my head, I believe it's 20mm.

Thank you both for the suggestions.

If he uses an aftermarket replacement dial, Rolex will never service that watch again.

I'd absolutely not suggest an aftermarket or otherwise non-authentic dial, I just the color scheme he has will be tough to pull off on straps. Will Rolex source a dial for him?

I do believe Rolex will source a dial and change it. But it must be authentic or he's fricked when it comes times for a general service or if something goes wrong with the watch.

You're saying he does NOT want me to plasti-dip it for him?

ETA: I think a new dial and some nice leather or croc bands would absolutely freshen up the watch to him. It would effectively be brand new. May cost $500 for everything, but it would be legit and very damn nice.

He wants a zulu band which I think would look horrible on that particular watch. And I have like 20 zulu/nato straps so I'm not knocking them

I like the Rolex's and I'll eventually have one. I fell in love with this one when shopping this year.
