word on the street is that they've found a bunch of oil. within 6-12 months their stock should soar or they'll get bought out by a larger company.

company website

take it for what it's worth

I don't own this stock (yet, it's sunday)

have any of you O&G people heard anything about this?

If it's public info that they've struck oil then I would imagine that stock would price that info in come tomorrow morning. Arbitrage is never as easy as it seems.

Link? Not seeing anything published. If its inside info then I'd be very cautious about what you just posted biting you on the SEC arse.

Why would a new oil find automatically translate into the company stock soaring? Even if true, it might not be an economically viable find.

This. A lot of oil has disappeared from many companies' balance sheets because it is no longer viewed as economically viable. The US and the rest of the world has a lot of oil in storage, a lot of economically viable oil still in the ground, and a lot of currently unprofitable oil.

With all that said, if KOS's supposed find is profitable for them to produce, it could help them tremendously. They have around $1 billion in debt to pay off by/in 2021, and they are not profitable right now. But since most/all of their leases are offshore (and offshore west Africa, for that matter), I'm skeptical about what this will really do for them. I'll put it on a watchlist.

Depends on how expensive it is to get it though. Oil looks like it's on track to fall below $40/barrel again.

It all depends on finding costs.

Plus they have to drill wells and set structures to produce it. And, what are the costs to export it to a refinery, and how much of a take does the host country get?

All things considered, they probably have to find a shite ton of oil just to break even. But I imagine they factored all of that in before they even went looking for oil.

Yeah, considering its "found" already, extraction costs would be the driving factor going forward.
