FWIW, all unions aren't like that. The company I work for has "represented" and "non-represented" employees. Almost all hourly employees are "represented", whether they join the union or not. The ones who don't pay union dues are still represented by the union but are frowned upon by union members. Our advancement in the company is merit-based, not seniority-based. The union COULD be a good thing if used for its true intentions. Our hourly employees know they will get raises every year because the union has bargained for them. They know that their benefits and pensions won't be cut. They know that they won't be laid off in favor of cheaper contract labor. The problem comes when lazy, shite stirring employees pull the union card for every little issue. We have plenty of those frickers here but for the most part, our union is a good thing.

What happened to the middle class? Maybe, there is a direct correlation between the decline of unions over the past 35 years and the decline of the middle class’s share of national income.

No there isn't. How many entry-level accountants, engineers, healthcare professionals, IT analysts, salesmen, pharmacists, and small business owners need unions?

Middle class workers don't need unions and don't want them. The only people that do want them in today's world are the people who can't accept their market value--their innate worth to society.

I'd argue that Union greed and ridiculous wage/benefit structures for uneducated and minimally skilled workers robbed American companies of their ability to compete in a global economy. As a result, those "middle class" jobs you refer to have been shifted overseas. In addition, those Union practices increased the operating costs of those companies which is ultimately passed along to the consumer by means of inflated pricing. Unions are not only bad for business, but also bad for the economy as a whole.

Just my opinion, but if the shop is already union, it is in your best interest to join as well.

Sure they are suppose to represent union / non-union equally, but it isnt going to happen.

FTR: I am anti-union for most situations.

The reason [that unions reduce income inequality] isn't just that unions defend their members. They also create changes in social norms, such as pressures for nonunion employers to match union gains.

If you need a union to get you a higher wage, you are overpaid. I've yet to meet a union worker that doesn't milk the system. My best friend is I'n q union and sends me picture messages all the damn time of them sleeping on the job. Shameful.

By my count, you have used 25 exclamation points in your 12 posts within this thread so far. That's impressive!

I'm not sure if the Shift+1 combo has been used on my keyboard that many times since I've had this computer. I'm glad you're so excited.

ETA: Uhoh, you edited at least one post since I typed this and added another one. The count is now up to 26 exclamation points by Tigah1 within this thread prior to this post. (just in case anyone else was curious) :csb:

I'm not mad. I have a solid skill set that is I'n demand. My market wages are close to your 6 figure salary without me having to work overtime. When I tell people what I do, I'm not embarrassed or have to defend my worth. It's pretty nice.

Anyone on here ever noticed that the anti-union states have the lowest quality of life as well as the lowest ACT scores (sans Michigan). Factories open up there for the same reason they open up in China and Mexico. Cheap, obedient labor. Not saying that's a bad thing. That's just how it *usually* is.

To the OP: do what your heart and mind tells you. Sometimes unions are just like a staffing and training agency. Other times they're impotent and sometimes their crooked, and sometimes they're legit negotiators.

You have to figure this stuff out for yourself.

I forgot to mention that you need to assess the vesting schedules of the two plans as well as the portability of union vs. non-union benefits/retirement. It varies.

So many places to go with this. You do know that you need that hotel maid, ditch digger and garbage man. Why is their life an insult to Union wages.

Those operators that keep the chemical plants running aren't earning less than you.

Well, you should know.
It all depends on where you've set your bar and your perception of mediocrity.

You are correct that we need someone to perform these unskilled tasks. What should the prevailing wage be for them?

I don't know nor do I care what they earn. What little I know about the job tells me that the skill level required is somewhere north of that of maids, ditch diggers and garbage men though.

Your mind really seems to work in a very childlike manner. Perhaps having a parental figure make the more critical choices for you is best in your particular situation.

By definition, the bar is set low to be considered mediocre. Only a union minion would think there is some sort of relativity there. Kind of like letting the slowest kid set the pace for the entire class.
