Quicken

It ain't perfect but good enough for us.

We pay ourselves first--401k, stock discount purchases, kids college, general savings, pay ourselves a car note (even when we do not have one because we will always need a car...keep em long time so cash avail for car purchase always on hand)...

The major buckets I manage relatively "tightly" (groceries, dining out, clothes, vacation, entertainment).

Some are "fixed" per decisions already made (house / mortgage, home ins, hoa, utilities)...

Taxes (fed, state, ss & medicare) are what they are (20-25% of income is variable so I peal taxes off as stand-alone and focus on non-tax budget items)

The rest is about choices...

From Kids tuition, Kids activities (sports, dance, school trips), etc to magazine subscriptions. There is only so much left after all the above and this is where a tool like Quicken helps with visibility to it all.

Good luck.

My wife has built an insanely complicated spreadsheet that tracks everything from our net worth, debt repayments, monthly spending etc. It's quite impressive.

This. When we got married I tasked her with complete responsibility over the budget and bill payments. I honest to God haven't looked at any of our accounts with any detail for about 6 years. It's worked out great.

I know quite a few guys that did this, they thought they were doing well financially, one day they decided to take a look and found out they were actually broke and in debt.

Every two or three months I peek at the balances of debt and savings on the spreadsheet. I am confident I would not have been able to save our money better myself.

I handle all the expenses and stuff and every thing is on Mint.

However, my wife and I like to joke that in a few years, she'll be that woman on Dateline, 20/20, etc saying "I don't know what happened!" that we all have found ourselves ridiculing in our lives.

Did snappa ever post a picture of what this budget of his can do? Selling like hot cakes on the MTB

I built an income tax calculator that fed my budget template awhile back. I've updated it a couple of times. It is honestly easier to plug into an online tool though so I quit updating it. I make a broad yearly budget when major purchases happen or income streams change so I can get a macro view of how things shake out.

I'm in management consulting, and am always preaching that you cannot manage what you do not measure.

My wife and I are in debt repayment mode (she just finished Med School), its a great tool. I do use Mint a lot, and its a better tool for managing your total financial picture, but Im too much of an excel nerd to let go completely.
