How can I tell if a finance company has lost the records for a student loan?

Is there any way other than to find out in court? Asking for a friend who doesn't have a TD account.

TIA

This. They'll have to prove it anyway.

I'd be very surprised if they really were lost though.

Lol, I was just asking my wife the same thing after hearing about all the lost records.

So, just so I can get my friend the instructions, he should just call his lender and ask for the signed paperwork for the loan? Or what exactly should he ask for?

May add a few words in there about the request not being an admission or acknowledgment of any debt.

A debt collector "verifying the debt" is an entirely separate and much lower hurdle than the "chain of title" issues this debt owner is having.

Verification is quite literally the debt collector writing back saying "ya you owe it and it's this much," so that won't tell him anything.

From what I understood, this only applies to folks who were in default already....

This whole thing reminds me of the movie Sneakers.

"No more secrets, Marty."
