The company resulting from the merger of the top two U.S. cable service providers would boast a footprint spanning from New York to Los Angeles, with a near 30 percent share of the pay TV market as well as a strong position in providing broadband Internet services.

eta: Is it capitalist or free marketist that support this? As it's no longer a free market without enough players.

I'm one of those types but my cable bill is currently $0.00 and it will be going up by 0%.

I'm fine with that.

Cable is treated more like a utility; it is not a free market in any way shape or form and really never has been.

This is very true.

Especially when it comes to some local governments and their granting of limited geographic monopolies to certain cable companies.

Did you see the recent articles about how cable companies are lobbying state legislatures to prevent the creation of municipal ISP's?

Not knowing enough about these 2 companies I have a couple of questions:

How many markets currently offer both Comcast and Time Warner?

If the merger gave "unprecedented leverage in negotiations with content providers and advertisers", wouldn't that result in lower re-broadcast fees to the content provides and higher advertising fees from advertisers, both of which would help keep down the cable bill?

If anything, this is damaging to DirectTV, Dish Network, and AT&T Uverse. Or am I just missing something huge?

Yes, you are missing some thing huge. While your theory drives down Comcast's COSTS, it does nothing to force them to lower their prices to consumers if they don't need to do so.

A company doesn't have to pass along savings to consumers until another competitor forces them to.

Which brings me back to question 1. How many markets were these 2 companies competing against each other?

I thought the FBI cracked down on all those "black boxes" back in the 90s, no?

Nah, I just have an antenna that gets me enough free over-the-air TV. I can then supplement with Netflix and other online options.

No need to pay for television anymore, IMO.

Everything is found online. No need for cable.

It could go up 100% and you would still be fine with it.

It's still a free market... It's just no one wants to put the cash up to build up the infrastructure in and I don't blame them.

Would you rather a government run cable company?

What? With the billions you've made off of your bitcoin horde you pinch pennies on cable TV? Something is not adding up here....

I would ditch cable in a heart beat if my wife's happiness wasn't so dependent on it.

It doesn't bother me in the least if they run up the price of cable. Cable is a luxury, if people really want it they'll pay the extra money. If they feel like the price outweighs the satisfaction they won't buy it, and they'll move to alternatives such as Netflix and Hulu, or move to other forms of entertainment.

It's as simple as that.

If enough people move away from cable then the cable companies will lower the price.

Cable had better get ahead of the technology curve or they will become the latest version of the buggy whip industry.

Communications are moving to 100% wireless transmission using various technologies. Having a tube connected to your TV which runs from a central transmitting site is silly.
