So the dentist I was going to was dropped by my insurance but he did not tell until he had already done two cleanings that weren't covered. I told him to take it up with the insurance because I am not paying, he should have told me that he was dropped before doing any further work. Well long story short I moved shortly there after and switched insurances because of a new job. Well I had forgotten about it and come to find out the damn thing is in collections. Do I have any recourse other than paying the bill? Can I dispute this through the credit bureau?

In all likelihood one of the documents you signed with the dentist is the one that says you acknowledge you are the responsible party for paying for the services you received.

You got your teeth cleaned. That ain't free.

Pay your bill.

Even though what the dentist did is shitty, Russian is probably right.

All those agreements have you as the ultimate responsible party. This includes even if you had insurance and the provider fricks up billing them, because they are doing that as "courtesy for the patient."

That's why most complaints I see on this board all end the same way, it's because of those financial responsibility docs.

It is ultimately your responsibility to make sure YOUR insurance will pay your provider.

Whoever handles billing at the dentist should have told you that they no longer accept your insurance. So it's crappy that they did not. But it's still your insurance and your bill.

Get in the habit of always confirming with doctors that they still accept your insurance, especially with dental insurance, which is flaky to begin with.

Call up the dentist, and tell him you will pay him the same amount the insurance company would have paid him (most cleanings are 100 percent covered by insurance at the contracted rate). Given how it went down, he should be willing to accept that.

Hijacking the original thread, I just got a credit monitoring alert from collections bill I never received after a surgery at a center last June.

The charge is from a pathology company that apparently was a subcontractor to the surgery center, but I never actually got a bill from them at any point over the last 1+ year. All the other specialties billed me and were paid either before surgery or immediately after.

The EOB for the pathology company from my insurer says the pathology company didn't even submit the claim for 6+ months, resubmitted again to correct it 3 months later and have never actually billed me for the agreed amount.

Also, the the collections amount is also nowhere close to the agreed amount from the EOB. The amount is roughly between the billed and agreed amounts. I disputed with all credit bureaus and sent the collection agency a verification letter this week.

While I await responses, would it be wise to call the pathology company? They're obviously terrible at billing, and I don't appreciate their messing with my credit. I'm happy to pay if I owe but will contacting them help at all?

I had something similar to that happen to me. Insurance paid only part of the bill because it was coded wrong by the doctor. The insurance company told the doctors office and billing company (run out of some crotchety arse woman's house) to resubmit under a certain code and the entire bill would be paid. The dumbfricks at the doctors office or billing co. resubmitted the same thing and have done so for three years every six months or so. The insurance keeps telling them to resubmit under another code and the entire thing will be paid.

Last time the billing company sent me a letter threatening to send me to collections. I told them I would never pay it because they are too stupid to get my money.

I absolutely would contact them.

But usually they won't put a medical collections on your report until the collections company has tried to collect for at least 30 days.

Did they have a bad address for you or something?

If they put the medical bill on your credit report you can have it removed using the HIIPA laws that contain privacy rules regarding protected health information. There is a way to get it done but you have to follow the process. Google it for how to get it removed using HIIPA.

Its the principal of the matter, he went over a year before telling me anything about being dropped from my insurance, after I had been there three times.
