Supposedly you can save up to 30% on your auto insurance. Did anyone try it and how much did you save?

These are some things customer service told me about the program:

- It cannot increase your rate over what you are currently paying.

- They are only checking for hard braking, daily average miles driven and driving between midnight and 4:00 am.

- There is no GPS, it uses cellular only to send data and there is no location tracking.

- You get your discount after the first month but they collect 6 months of data.

- You do not have to recollect data as long as you own your car.If you get a new car to have to resubmit to data collection.

I did a while back and got this in return after sweating bullets every time I accelerated or got cut off and braked.

Please return the Snapshot device(s)

I'll tell you more..

They give you a login to a page that shows your daily driving activities. You are also docked points for driving at certain times (late at night). I got clobbered if I took the vehicle on a hunting trip and drove to camp at 4 am, lol

I guess it assumes you are out partying and drinking.

The page shows graphs and makes you feel like you need to drive better the next day to make up for a hard brake or too many miles, etc.

Some instances, I think it made me drive worse, not wanted to brake hard and climbing on top of the car in front of me to avoid braking hard....my family hated me....

All that for 6 months and I didn't get 1% off.

My advise is to just get other quotes from reputable competing companies. Screw em if they need proof they are overcharging you! It's a gimmick that makes you stay put.

Car insurance is the same no matter which company you go with (reputable) except for price. They all pay the limits in the policy in the same basic manor.

I was with AllState paying $165/month full coverage. Switched to progressive and got a quote of $105/month before snapshot. Drove for approximately 4.5 months with the device and got a 30% discount. Pay approx $74/month now.

It tracks mileage, hard brakes, and driving times. Nobody knows their exact formula. After 1 month I got a discount of 25% after averaging 2 hard brakes/week while driving 400 miles/week. By the time the 4.5 months was over, i had the hard brakes down to 1.3/week, approx 400 miles/week, and averaged about 30 min/week between the times of midnight and 4:00 am. And i still got 30% discount (the max) with 400 miles and 30 minutes of high risk driving/week.

As for GPS I have no idea.

If you drive like a grandma like me then it is worth it no question. I accelerate and brake slowly. But if you come to a screeching halt each time then you will get zero discount. It beeps with each hard brake and sometimes a really hard brake can dock you for 3 of them. To put this in perspective i only had 20-25 hard brakes over a 4.5 month period. I knew somebody that got that many in a week. Needless to say he got 0% discount.

Damn, my driving must suck.

In fairness, I drive tons in big city traffic and I10. Hard to do that and be in total control of your braking.

Glad to see it works out. It originally gave me a discount after a month or so, but then took it back and gave me zero. Also, I have a teen that drove it every once in a while.

ps..what type of vehicle (value also)

It is a 2011 ford fusion...was valued 13-16k when i started policy. I drove like a grandma and especially careful because I knew this discount was for the life of the car and policy so I might have it for another 6 years.

The Miss River Bridge is what caused all my hard brakes. Going from BR to WBR and vice versa. everything comes to a screeching halt and nothing you can do sometimes. I once went 35 straight days without a hard brake then got 3 the next day. LOL

Began Jan 7th. After the first month, they refunded me a proprated 30% for the remaining 5 months until I make my next payment.

About a month ago the device quit working. I noticed so I called them and they shipped me a new one with a postage paid box to mail back the old one- no hassle at all to me.

Still on track for full, permanent 30% discount when I finish the program June 7th.

I know someone who has, it's pretty ridiculous. You pretty much have to drive like a 90 year old woman everywhere you go.

I have it in currently. After the first month they refunded me 30% of my 6 month quote. Expected to keep the 30% discount barring any unforeseen circumstances. Have to keep it in a total of 6 months. I rarely drive my personal vehicle though. Work out great for my scenario.
ETA: I had to call and ask what is considered a hard brake. They told me it is a decrease of 7 mph or more in one second

Not true at all...

Doesn't track speed whatsoever. You get dinged for 3 things

Hard Breaks (7mph or more within 1 sec)
Mileage Driven
Times you drive (Midnight - 4am is the worst)

This was mainly what he had a problem with. In traffic you have people pull out in front of you all the time. A lot of hard braking going on lol

Yeah, you don't realize how many times you do it until that beep goes off.... For those 6 months, I just doubled my distance behind vehicles in front of me.

Sorry, but I just don't believe this.

Maybe not immediately, but be sure, they're keeping track of that data, so next renewal your rates will likely go up if they don't like what they see.

I borrowed my in laws car and didn't realize they had the snap shot. She asked how the car was and I said fine but it makes weird beeping noises every time I turn. They weren't happy....

And its easy as hell to rig your data. If you are going on a long trip for a day or two, just pull the sensor out, so that the mileage doesn't count against you.
