I am trying to cut the fat off of my spending habits. Not only with month to month transactions but also scheduled payments with phone, tv, internet. How do you guys cut waste out of your budget?

Largest expense for me is eating out. Go to Sam's or Costco and buy your food in bulk and eat at home. You'll save money there guaranteed.

Also, cut the cord and just keep internet at home. No need for cable these days

Look through what you're spending monthly. Classify each as a want or a need. Reduce wants, profit.

This, plus get control of your cell phone usage by putting your data consumption on a diet. Phone plus messaging cost should be no more than $10-$15 a month. The rest is data most of which is unnecessary.

Like the others have said, stop paying for cable. Get Netflix or Hulu and watch for 7 bucks a month. You can pick up an antenna and still catch nbc, cbs, abc and fox. Something else to consider is your auto insurance, shop around maybe you can find a cheaper rate somewhere. Do you have an auto loan? If you do and have a high monthly payment you could consider finding a cheaper ride. Eating at home will save you more than you think, make a grocery list of what you want and stick to it at the store. You will start noticing just how much you are actually eating and will keep you from wasting money by purchasing too much and the food going bad.

Your local public library has ebooks, movies, audiobooks, graphic novels, etc. already paid for by your tax dollars.

the main thing is to figure out exactly how much you are spending and exactly what you are spending it on.

make a detailed list of every thing that you spend for a couple of months...you will be really surprised on what your money goes to buy every month.

Spankum is right. The goal is to figure out where you give up the least to make a cut.

For example, I love soccer and the only way to watch matches is to have a premium cable setup. I'm not cutting the cord because of it. No one in this thread would accept cable as a reasonable expense though.

I did this awesome new thing and go outside, workout, and spend time with family/friends. I find I do not have time for much else.

I also cut the cord. Just have internet. Watch Netflix and a few youtube videos before I head to bed.

Never looked back.

I go to the bar and socialize for sports or go to a buddies house.

Good times.

Edit: though cable isn't all that expensive. I find most people waste more on food than anything else. Going out to eat takes up a chunk of change.

Starbucks is another cost for most people. I make my own coffee.

1. Shop your insurance car, home, life
1a. Term life only
2. Rework your cell plan
3. Refi any high interest rate debt
4. Reducing the amount of times you eat out
5. Get a fuel efficient used car - accord or yota
6. Move your thermostat up 2 degrees in summer and down two degrees in winter
7. Unwind from dry cleaning - iron at home
8. Evaluate your gym membership (esp. During summer months)
9. Get rid of any self storage rent you pay
10. Don't spend 4K on a week vacation - plan better and have just a good time for less money
11. Amazon prime has been my friend because I still hate wal mart
12. Stop buying bottled water and invest in a good filter system.
13. Don't go to Starbucks
14. Live in a neighborhood that has good or great public schools
15. Utilize your local library

How often do most people really need data/internet on the fly? Streaming music and video on your phone is just plain dumb. Turn your data off and wait until you're connected to wi-fi.

It's all about budgeting, and the most important part about that is moderation. It's like a diet, you can't give up ice cream for the rest of your life but you can only eat ice cream if you work out that day.

It's all about knowing ahead of time how you are going to spend you money, and not going to pay your bills the beginning of the month and trying to view how the heck you spent $1200 on groceries and $500 on eating out.

It works very well to pay cash for groceries and cash for eating out. Pull that money out the beginning of the month and spend X on eating out and X on groceries. If you have to drink regular and not organic milk to get under your threshold, it's not life changing.

I also pull out cash every month for 'blow' money for my wife and I. This really REALLY hanged our savings. We each have X amount we can spend on anything we want each month. In this matter it prevents any arguments and it allows yourself to budget for BS you don't need.

This can very easily exceed the cost for cable just by going to the bar for 1 or 2 games per month.

Bottled water is $3-4 for a 24 pack. This has almost no impact on someone's budget.

Using Google Maps is the easiest example of why data is needed.

Each trip to the bar is at least $40. Staying longer means that number goes up.
