I'm starting to look towards the idea of getting out of the employee realm and finding something else to explore on my own. Right now, my wife and I are focused on knocking out all debt and building up funds so we can have some flexibility of an opportunity becomes available. Im still two or three years from making a move, I think.
I'd love to hear from some of the folks here that have made the jump. What were your starting points. Did you find good resources, reading material, etc that helped guide your decisions? I'm just speaking in generalities here, but if you have any specific advice for someone thinking about taking that path, I'm all ears.

Atlas Shrugged, The E myth, The Millionaire Next Door. Those are some of my favorites. Rich Dad Poor Dad is a good one too.
Try to listen to some entrepreneur or business podcasts.
Any idea what you want to go into? Provide a few more details and you should get a lot of help from this board.

check out NUTS! the story of southwest airlines.
it's packed with perfect examples of building a culture for a company and providing an atmosphere that employees are proud to work / spend time learning and growing with.

What is your line of work? E-Myth is a book I recommend to people who are both professionals and skilled labor when they go out on their own. It discusses how to work ON your business instead of working IN your business, which is important if you ever want to have a business that employs someone other than yourself.
Look into SCORE and some of their resources, especially financing a business and writing a business plan.

Very good resources, but these guys focus primarily on tech start-ups in high growth industries.

Sam Altman and Paul Graham from Y Combinator are awesome resources. Read their essays, blog posts, podcasts, etc.

Know how to keep score and talk to bankers so take the first accounting course somewhere and the first finance course at some community college.
Make sure you product or service generates cash flow preferably at high margins.
Proprietary, patented, exclusively are all good things.
What is your "competitive advantage"? Market to that.
From the very first day build your brand--whatever it is. I watch these folks that buy franchises and never develop their own brand. Can be a sad thing.
Then sell sell sell your service or product and everything else will take care of itself.

The Entrepreneur Roller Coaster by Darren Hardy is a good one. Some good recommendations already posted as well.

I couldn't agree more! So simple, yet very eye-opening.
