That sucks! It doesn't seem fair he beat cancer once only to have a different kind attack him. Is he going through chemo for the leukemia?

I had a fried get leukemia and she was in remission for 7 years. Then it came back and she passed away three weeks ago only 5 months after being diagnosed again. The leukemia was under control but she developed pneumonia and she couldn't fight it off because her immune system was so beaten down from the latest chemo.

No, he is 80 YO and really doesn't have any upside. The doctor caught it last year and the oncologist diagnosed it as chronic leukemia which people that have it can still have relatively long life span. His latest scan showed clean colon but the leukemia had changed and become much more aggressive. He has been treated for schizophrenia as well and the drugs improved that remarkably, but the side effects made him disinterested in most activities. He would tell you he has had a good life, is at peace with his choice, and is thankful he never had to be institutionalized.

That's why I was bitching about LTC insurance on another thread a few weeks ago, $219/month for 10+ years and it would not even pay for an at home sitter which is much cheaper than a nursing home. LTC is such a crap shoot it is impossible to project accurately whether someone needs it, all or none. The nursing home admin we spoke with for a fall back was ranting about the new health care changes and what it is doing to them, she was not happy at all regarding new policies and burdensome new paper work.

So, you don't think the doctors should be making more than your wife?

Absolutely not. They work their asses off and have tremendous liability for every decision they make. I have the greatest respect for what they do.

My point is that they are going to be expected to do more for less. The profession will hit a breaking point.

I had a ton of friend in Med School when I first got out of undergrad. Man, those kids partied HARD, especially on weekends during their first two years.

This. I partied much harder in med school than I did in college. There were plenty of nights when we shut down Red Eye/F&M's uptown.

Ahh, Frump & Manny's!

That's where everyone always ended up. Everyone would leave Que Sera on Wednesdays and head on over to F&Ms. On the weekends, it was known as the last stop resort. It would be fairly empty until about midnight. Then people would start trickling in. At 2:00 a.m. it seems everybody in the city was in that place. Dancing on the pool table, making out in the photo booth with some med student you just met, playing pool on the outside patio ... Good Times!!!

if you think docs wont make less money, your misinformed.

surgeons will hurt worse than patient care physicians....and surgeons that own their own surgical centers will hurt the worst.

Gotcha. Do you think it trickle down to your wife's salary or everyone down? It would seem your wife only makes a good salary because everyone is making good money.

I think NP's will have a larger role in the future. Not sure what will happen with doctor's salaries but pretty sure they will go down.
