Recently was offered a position as a Tax senior with a public company. Something just doesn't seem right, pretty decent pay increase (8-9%), solid benefits but a very small employer match (no ESOP). I interviewed with several of the top people, in their offices and they all had a single, small, 19 inch monitor they worked on, the vibe was weird as well...complete silence in the workplace. Also, the glassdoor reviews are terrible. As I've posted before, I've been looking to get out of public accounting but this just seems odd. Any advice from the the CPAs on this board?

Are they one of your current clients? Do you know which firm they use if not yours? Reach out to your network base and see what they have to say about the company.

If it doesn't feel right at the interview when they're over selling themselves, it won't feel right on day 1 when you're just John doe, employee #105. The best part of being in public is the wide range of industry you can go into. Send out some more resumes and find a place that fits with you

They are not a client and they use one of the Big Four. I'm absolutely leaning towards turning them Dow just because it feels odd. I appreciate the input.

plenty of industry jobs. Find one you're comfortable with.

I went straight from public to a controller gig for a small company.

What do you mean by public company? Public accounting firm?
Senior is a tough gig, at least in my day (and I was in audit). Of course in my day they paid less than industry. We always had glass doors - open door policy. I liked it.

Don't take it if it doesn't feel right. When you're going to work for a company you should feel excited about it and the feeling should be mutual. Especially at the beginning.

Like a personal relationship.....

That's pretty cool. The things you mention as making you uncomfortable seem minor to me. But I guess not to you. Quitting a job at which you are secure bears some risk. I'm in that position right now (thinking about accepting an offer) and my bad feeling comes from the fact that I know I'm secure where I am for as long as I want it.

Is there anything you miss about public accounting?

I'm only one year into public accounting but just curious to hear from others that have experienced it and moved on.

Banging coworkers on out of town audit trips is about it.

You probably learn the most in public accounting since you have multiple clients with various business models and approaches.

The clients you get assigned also have a huge impact on your outlook. If clients got their stuff together it isn't bad. But when they can't do anything right well....it's just a complete beat down.

Learning is great. Hours and travel suck.

This. When you deal with clients who can't reconcile a bank statement in quickbooks, it gets old really fast.

I was in public accounting, then a large medical center, then got bored and went to a publicly traded manufacturing company. It was pure hell and I had a count of a boss who was a terrible human being. She didn't know shite and would get mad if you asked the Controller or the CFO the history of something she didn't know or just flat out didn't know. Since she didn't know anything she bought working more than any other department was the solution because hey no one else is working as hard as we are! I got the Fck out,of there and am now a controller with a small to midsize company. It's great and the best job I've ever had. Great people, great schedule and no blowhard accounting people to make you work long hours for the hell of it. I report to the president and have a small staff that reports to me. Everyone is happy as long as numbers are timely and accurate which I have complete control over and pretty much no surprises since the buck stops with me.

Also, reach out to your network and find out about the company. You have to know someone who works there or has worked there. Due my situation above, I will hopefully never take another job without knowing for sure the culture of the company.
