I am trying to get out of corporate America and either start my own business or buy an existing business. Besides business brokers, where does one go to find businesses for sale. If you know someone selling please share.

Networking is the best way to find businesses for sale. Talk to lawyers and CPAs. There are a number of web sites, as well as brokers, but finding a good one there is going to be tough.

Any idea what type of business you’re considering? What’s your opinion on franchises? That would be one route.

Befriend a few CPA’s at local firms. Seemingly regularly my dad has clients mention they’re trying to sell.

Does not matter the type of business as I do not want to limit myself. With that said, I am not interested in convenience stores or restaurants.

I am very familiar with franchising. I am not as interested in giving my earnings to a corporate office to tell me what and how to do it, when I can do it on my own.

Would this be a passive investment or something you will actively work in?

In addition to talking to CPAs and attorneys, I would add trying to talk to someone at your local chamber of commerce, as well as an organization like Score.

Also, what small businesses do you like to work with? Go talk to their owners and ask them.

I just don't see a lot of small business sales to random non-current business owners these days. Usually when someone wants out of a small business, assuming there is no family to take it over, they either sell to an employee, to a larger company, or to someone else they know.

If you think realtors are a scam for the amount of money they get, they have nothing on business brokers.

What do you excel in?

I’d concentrate more on areas that match your skill set and less on just looking for something for sale.
