Breakfast interview

This Thursday I have a interview with a investment bank. The location of this interview is at Egg Harbor ( breakfast place) at 10:00 am. The managing director/ guy interviewing me says bring nothing and looking forward to a open, interactive and fluid discussion.

What advice would you have for a interview that is out to eat compared to in a office? I am dressing business casual recommendation from a managing director who works in PE.

I'd also look at the menu beforehand, have something in mind/picked out that is easy to eat and not messy.

Yes, definitely wear a suit. (And don't shed your jacket and drape it on the back of your chair.) This is more akin to an audition than an interview...you're being assessed on your soft skills: everything from etiquette to conversational skills. Some folks look great on paper, seem okay in an office, but cannot be trusted to chew with their mouths closed, put a napkin in their laps, or have any idea of how to make casual-but-business-appropriate conversation. Be as polished as you can...

If dining out isn't second nature to you, find a decent business etiquette guide and do some reading. Follow the lead of your host in ordering...if he orders the giant omelet w/extra bacon, don't get just a fruit cup. If he orders a fruit plate, don't go for the big greasy fry-up.

I'd also add be as nice and polite to the waitstaff as humanly possible. Your interviewer will definitely notice how you treat other people.

Also, sometimes during meal interviews the interviewer will have the server "mess up" your food just to see how you react.

Eat it anyway.

Wear pajamas. Have a five o'clock shadow. Exhale large puffs of morning breath. Get a bloody mary. Order a double stuffed pork chop sandwich with extra sausage gravy. Have two over easy eggs on the side and be sure to ask for extra buttery toast to sop up the runny yolk.

Do the opposite of what I say.

Unless this is Manhattan or somewhere akin where business prof is the norm, I'd take your buddy's advice. Youre going to look like a goofball in a suit at breakfast.

I feel like some of the advice in this thread is the equivalent of my mother in law telling us get to the airport 3 hours early for my flight out of hobby. If you over-prepare, over-dress, whatever, it will be awkward. Youre having breakfast with someone that is interested enough to have breakfast with you. Show him or her that youve been there before and be yourself above all.

Edit #2 if he says don't bring anything don't bring your frickin resume. Sheesh. First thing in the guy's mind will be "well this dipshit doesn't listen". You aren't there to talk about your resume.

For what's it worth, I agree with this advice. Otherwise, try to make a connection and be yourself. Good luck.
