I am about to start studying for the exam for the 2nd time. About 6 years ago I used the Becker Live Format course taught by an instructor at ULL over the course of 8 Saturdays. Basically all the instructor did was put on a DVD from Becker and then gave us homework problems. I was disappointed because I assumed it would be more of a classroom environment with the instructor going through the book as well as having interactive discussions with the class.

I live in Baton Rouge now, and am considering the live course offered at LSU on Tuesday & Thursday nights. I was wondering if anyone had any input on how the class is run at LSU or if it is pretty much the same as my first experience.

I have access to Yaeger CPA videos for FAR, and it is set up more like a classroom. The downside with them is there is no discussion and no one to ask if I need further explanation on a particular concept.

It's going to be the same thing...just a guy putting on a DVD.

I've been using CPAExcel and it's working out great for me...and significantly cheaper

CPAExcel

Have you been using CPAExcel since they merged with Wiley Test Bank? I am currently using Wiley Test bank and the Multiple Choice Questions are great but the Simulations are nothing like the real exam.

That is what I was afraid of. I am going to use the Yaeger videos and they also provide access to the Wiley Test Bank.

I am starting with FAR, so it will be a tough road. Balancing study time with work and 2 kids should be fun. I wish I would have stuck with it right out of college!

Yes, from what I understand, it hasn't changed. We have two younger staff who are currently studying for the exam. I tried to talk them out of Becker. But the firm lends them the money for it (basically the firm pays for it and then they pay it back via payroll deductions). They both did FAR first, one passed, one failed. Both of them now have switched to just doing it all online. Same exact stuff... but now they can do a few hours each night instead of spending all day in a classroom looking at a video screen.

FWIW, and I took the exam about 8 years ago, I did Gleim. Excellent cost. Got the book and the test bank and the practice sims. At the time, they did not have any videos that I knew of. Not sure now.

You just gotta put the hours in. Hopefully now you are more mature and hopefully can get in a couple of hours of study at night after the kiddos go to bed. If you are at all a decent test taker, 80-100 hours of studying per section and you should be fine.

Good luck!!

Yeah I'm actually in the far 3 lecture right now. The lectures pretty much do nothing for me and it is unreal how much crap falls under the far umbrella.

Um honestly I have just been doing the homework so about 12 hours a week 2-3 weeks then once I'm done with the section I have 3-5 days until I take the test and then I turn it on and study 6-10 hours a day doing the reviews and practice tests and note cards. I love the note cards because I have a short attention span.
Edit: add 12 hours a week for the videos but as you can see I usually just half arse those.

Sounds good. Thats similar to what Ive been doing. Im averaging about an 80% on the Wiley Test bank practice tests. The toughest thing is that it covers so much info...

I don't know about Wiley but I have been scoring about 10 points higher than my Becker practice exams.

Same, except if your lucky you'll get to be distracted by Dr. DeLaune. Only hot accounting professor we had, coolest one also.....probably contributed to her hotness.

Whatever yall do just work the problems. Dont worry about the lectures, work the problems til you are blue in the face and the concepts will naturally come to you
