I may have a job opportunity with the VA. Pay looks slightly less than others in my field, but benefits seems to be pretty solid. Looking for some opinions on those that have dealt with the organization.

I know the stigma about how crappy the VA is, especially since I use them for my own healthcare. This position wouldn't be in healthcare itself.

Take it, nothing like a good government job.

One of my best friends does. He doesn't bitch about his job near as much as most of my other friends do, for whatever that's worth. He seems to enjoy it.

Work with a guy who used to work for the VA. He said it was awful.

I would imagine it is facility specific.

I retired from a State/public run inpatient psych hospital and worked for a well run/managed outfit. Others, maybe not as much.

Didn't get rich, didn't expect to, but provided for our family.

I have no experience working for the VA but I do have experience as a vendor for the VA. Generally one of the worse customers to have. The doctors are nice but the staff surrounding them can be just awful and they move at the speed of molasses. Getting anything done almost takes a literal act of congress. They would be fired quick in the private sector. I would imagine it depends highly on the clinic location. My experience is with Alexandria and New Orleans. Things may have changed as this was a few years ago before the national outrage over wait times and my current role doesn't have me dealing with the VA much.

If things haven't changed and you want to see something sad then just go to the Urology clinic in New Orleans. You have men that fought for this country that either can't piss or can't stop pissing sitting in the waiting room for hours while their bladder fills to capacity or their dick drips constantly. I've never seen anything like it in the private sector. I hated going there because it would ruin my day.

VA has amazing benifits. If you aren't involved in patient care it's a great career.

However, if you are in patient care, you can burn out real quick. The stories of how bad it can be are true. I rotated through there for 5 years.

I am currently at the Nola Va, as well. I love it & in my field, it is where everyone wants to end up. Benefits are great, you do not have to sell your services (as you usually have to in the private sector), and it's a pretty laid back environment. I love my job and I love the facility I am at.
