Why did we play FSU 5 years in a row at home from 1979-1983?

Long story short I was watching old videos and every game against FSU seemed to be in Baotn Rouge so I researched and we had a 5 games stretch where we only played them at home. Why? I know they weren't the power they were today in the early 80s but how could we convince them to come to us 5 years in a row?

In exchange they received a player to be named later, turned out to be Warrick Dunn.

That's putting it mildly. They were what would be considered mid-major level when Bowden took over, and not a very good mid major at that. They had no fan support. They were willing to go on the road because they couldn't fill up their stadium at home. FSU pulled off some shockers, created some buzz, got a few top notch recruits, and the rest is history. A lot of minor schools have tried that model since then, none with the success of FSU.

ETA: FSU was an all girls' school until sometime in the 1950's.

They probably agreed to it so they could build a recruiting presence in Louisiana.

Florida State went 0-11 in 1973 and 1-10 in 1974.They were an independent having a hard time scheduling games.

In 1981 they played Nebraska,Ohio State,Pittsburgh,Notre Dame and LSU in consecutive weeks All on the road.

That's super embarrassing then because we lost every game but one!

I knew they were bad but I had no idea how much of anomaly they were. They didn't even start playing until 1947. Which is actually when they went co-ed (just looked it up). It's amazing that they were able to rise in the caste system that is college football like they did.

Well they sucked when we made the contract with them. By the time we played the games they had gotten pretty good.

I'd love a home and home with them.

Tallahassee has strong talent

They were not a football power, weren't in a conference, and were willing to do whatever it took to get a tough schedule so they could prove themselves. They won 4 out of 5, but the one we did win was the most memorable game I ever attended in Tiger Stadium.

Also, at that time, Florida State was playing in what amounted to a 5A high school stadium. That may have had something to do with it.

That '82 game was the funnest game I have ever attended.

This rant really brings back memories. We had to play them in B.R. because we refused to play them in Florida then. So, they agreed to 5 home games at LSU. My wife and I went to the game and stayed at the old Bellemont Motel on Airline. Fla. State was also staying there and we saw them walking around. I met Bobby Bowden in the gardens in the middle ground area. He was not famous yet, but being a big fan,I knew who he was. He was nice and friendly. A lot of the staff and coaches were getting lunches from a big grocery store deli across the street from the Bellemont. We did too.

At the time, Florida State could not get anyone to play them in Tallahassee.
Bobby Bowden started a tradition for the Seminoles. When they won at Arizona State or Georgia, they would take home a chunk of that turf and plant it on the field at Tallahassee. Soon they had a sizable collection of "scalps" from away games.
Not long after that they had the national respectability to get home and home dates.

Bobby Bowden, agreed to play anybody, anywhere. FSU was a nothing program at the time and he saw the big picture. National notoriety against the likes of LSU, Nebraska and others ... I would say that bet paid off!

The 82 game with the oranges was unbelievable. There must not have been an orange on the grocery store shelf within a 50 mile radius. Was sitting in south end zone. Fog rolled in and could not see any of the upper deck.

If you do further research focusing on the FSU side you will see that Bowden made a name for himself and FSU by doing that, playing anyone anywhere. They were not national powers yet.

There was a guy on every street corner selling oranges out of sacks. They must have made a killing. ??
