There is no doubt as to the 5 players who had the best careers at LSU:

Pete Maravich
Chris Jackson
Shaquille O'Neal
Bob Pettit
Rudy Macklin

Would they make up the best basketball team? I don't think so, due to their styles of play and need for the ball. But I don't think that was the intent of the OP's question.

All these players were good, but not all-time good. Vernell was just average good, he thrived playing with Shaq. And J Martin only showed up to play the last half of this past season, and that's about it for him.

I wonder how Bob Pettit's game would play out in today's world? I know he could play in today's game, but would he still be a stud?

And could you imagine if Pete would have concentrated more on strength and conditioning along with better life habits as opposed to knocking down 60 points hungover.

Anyone not saying

Maravich
Jackson
Macklin
Pettit
Shaq

Are out of their minds. This whole Maravich and Jackson not being able to play together is bull. Maravich is still 5th all time in Career Assists in LSU history behind 4 guys who played 4 seasons at LSU and as a senior averaged 6.1 per game which in college bball today would still typically put him in the top 10-20 in the country.

John Williams was better than Macklin
You're probably right about Pettit, but I picked Simmons just because.

If your playing a real game or picking an all time team you got to have Ethan Martin at point!

This. If you're playing for style points and scoring and showmanship...CJ or Pete are your point guard.

If you are playing to beat the other all-time teams, Ethan will be your point guard.

That said, what did his teams do again?

Not much...But he did avg 44.2 ppg for three straight years...It would have been a joy to watch a player do what he did. Win or lose...............

? CJ made the NCAAT twice (in 2 years).

So....... Look at the talent difference in team talent... What CJ did while at LSU was remarkable...... I haven't seen a player as good as him since he left LSU in the whole country...........

I was more of playing devil's advocate with the Pete/CJ comparison.

I wasn't around to see Pete play at LSU, but I started LSU in CJ's Soph year. Easily I grew up watching LSU basketball in the 80's.

CJ's freshman year was simply amazing. He hit the ground running and was remarkable.

From my understanding of Pete's career, LSU hired his dad Press to get Pete to come to LSU. It was pretty much designed to showcase Pete not necessarily to produce a great team. An elder statesmen on the board may be able to expand or debunk that narrative.
