this was the situation. benton was out of high school for 2 yrs. he went to hargraves military chool right out school cause he didn't qualify for LSU then. so the next yr he didn't get in again and was at strop city training and getting qualified to attend LSU and randle was a senior and here is what was the problem. we still had lafell and toliver and that would have made 4 wrs and hell randle only had like 10 catches his freshman yr. randle said something to the fact that it would not be fair for either benton or randle to have to fight for the 3rd wr spot and he was right. and les made a great decision cause benton hasn't done anything at auburn.

I don't follow recruiting much so at the time I really thought Benton was the better guy. Both were 5 star I think but Benton was older.

I seem to recall that we took Perilloux and lost out on McCoy, but that could have been bluster from some of our fans. I'm not sure how close we ever were to getting Colt.

McCoy was LSU's to lose prior to Saban leaving and Perrolous committing to LSU.

He definitely wasn't LSU's to lose when Saban was here McCoy committed to Texas before Saban started his last season at LSU. He was scheduled to visit LSU the weekend before signing day but reaffirmed to Texas on a visit the week before and never took the official to BR.

quote:

"Everything about the visit this weekend was just great. It was everything I had ever hoped my official visit would be. I'm absolutely locked into Texas."

That's him two weeks before Perrilloux switched to LSU.

False

Speaking from personal knowledge or from what rivals/insider website told you?

Just wondering, cause those insider sites don't always have all the info. A key player of our 2007 team almost went to a school not even listed as a school of interest on his rivals recruiting page (shows "NO Interest on Scout ) and he told me himself he was pretty close to going there. So just wondering how you could say "false" so easily.

I met Dmitch right after RR committed. I bet he might peek in and shed some light on the situation.

Dmitch said that he would have went to OU if not to LSU. Also Benton was headed to Auburn before Randle's father went on that radio show. The Auburn TE phillip Lutzenkirchen said on signing day that he committed on his visit weeks before but asked that the coaches keep it a secret. IMO he thought that AU would have less competition and would allow him to make an impact early and get to the NFL quicker. Dmitch insinuated that his father said the things that he did to take the heat off of Benton because he knew that the coaches and community would be upset with him for not going to LSU after LSU had reserved his scholarship and stood behind him while he tried to get his academics in order.

Thanks. Man, that team really was sick with talent then.

Wasn't that Randle Mackey kid like a year ahead of both of them, or two years maybe?

Listened to the interview live. RR's Dad was pissed throughout. Whether he was serious or posing is up for debate. He said Les was lying to them. He said Les was telling them they'd play different positions and could be on the field at the same time, but the position he promised both in separate meetings was the same. When the interview ended he said he didn't know where RR would go and this was at 5pm the day before NSD. Then a bunch of Gumps started calling in begging RR to go to Bama with Julio.

It doesn't matter because of the qb situation at Lsu we had no one to get the ball to them

The word around Bastrop was always that Randle's dad was trying to take the heat off benton for going out of state. Classy move, if that's how it went.

I know Randle was a year behind Mackey because he started at QB his senior year. I think Benton was gone a year ahead of Mackey? There was another Port Sulphur kid named Jamal Recasner who came up with Mackey after the storm. He signed with Southern Miss as a RB but I don't know if he ever did anything. Loaded team.

I communicated with Dandy Don through email back then. He said Miles went with Randle over the other guy although I don't remember why.

So is the other story true...that your dad was taking the heat off Benton with his comments?

The head coach at St. Aug was at Bastrop during that time. That fiasco combined with Randal Mackey is why he hates LSU so much.
