Was LSU faced with taking either Reuben Randle OR DeAngelo Benton

Was Les Miles forced to choose between Benton and Randle? I remember there was chatter that Randle would not come if Benton was also taken. Does anyone know if that was the actual state of affairs in 2009 or just speculation?

If that was a case, that was an incredibly good choice. Are there any other notable choices that worked out this well in LSU history. I have to admit I'm not a recruiting guru.

Randle's dad called a radio talk show and said on air that RR wasn't going to LSU if D-lo came here. I dont think his reasoning for that was ever explained though.

I seem to recall that they either didn't like Benton or thought he was a bad influence. They went to the same high school if I am remembering correctly.

He is. I notice you didn't say he is still playing at Auburn, because that would require a very liberal use of the term playing to describe his bustdom.

I seem to recall that we took Perilloux and lost out on McCoy, but that could have been bluster from some of our fans. I'm not sure how close we ever were to getting Colt.

This.. They both came from Bastrop. In retrospect, Miles made the right decision... .again.

Wasn't he the guy that started the arguement that led to that shooting?

I was thinking Benton went to Ravyille, not Bastrop. But I am not positive about that.

Not so much. Although, I do have to say, at the time, it looked like a much more tenuous decision than it turned out to be.

There was a rumor that Benton wanted to go to Auburn, and RR's dad made up the story about RR not going to LSU if they took Benton, so Benton could save face.

If true:

When it isn't too soon, I will make a classless joke about "catching" and "bullets." For now, I guess we will all have to make it to ourselves.

Also, I know that Randle's Dad is a good guy in the community. He was also close with the Benton family and wanted the best for both kids. I think his comments may have been taken out of context, but his final recruitment was down to us and OU.

i thought it was teh other way aroudn. it was all about what randle did. Benton wouldn't go to LSU if randle did. i.e. randle held the keys to the decisions.

Absolutely.. I remember how big of recruits both of them were. It is pretty funny to look back on it now and give him shite though.

he supposedly wanted to go to Auburn because of lesser competition at the position, then go one and done. Aubbies actually thought they got the better end of the deal
