My dad was there...he was 12 with his Boy Scout troop that was brought to the game...
He told me the only other game that he attended that compared to how electric the crowd was and how intense was the '79 USC game which he and I was at and I was 9 years old then...

I was there - north end zone - in line with east hash marks about 2/3 the way up. I was there with my mother, father, and 8-month pregnant wife.
I still have the program from that game - but it is missing the 'centerfold' page.
Since the action was coming right at us, it took a while for it to register that it was going to be a TD. In all the hooping and hollering right after the TD, someone from higher up came tumbling down the steps - He got up a few rows below us and staggered back up to the top - drunk as a skunk.
The real critical part of the game came next - Ol Miss had been running a vanilla offense and punting on 3rd down, confident they could win 3-0. After the score became 7-3, they marched right down the field and got a 1st down inside the 5 yd line. On 2nd down we were offside, but they made it to the 1 yd line and refused the penalty in order to save the yard of distance. 3 more plays and they still couldn't punch it in. Cannon and Robinson combined on the final tackle.
It has been a highlight of my football life forever since.

Was 6. Listened on radio. Neither team was getting first downs. Punting on 3rd downs.

Sound familiar.
Yes. That is why I was so let down when it was announced that Alabama had been selected for a rematch.

Both of my parents were students at LSU at that time. Both were at the game.

The game wasn't actually on TV, just radio.

I wasn't there but it doesn't stop me from claiming that I was there

I was 13 and sitting in the curve of the SE upper deck in what is currently section 412. It was a warm and very humid night to the point of almost being foggy inside the stadium. As others have said it was a defensive struggle. Coach Vaught was confident that the Tigers couldn't score against his defense and punted on early downs through much of the 2nd half rather than risk a turnover in their territory. Cannon caught the punt on the 1st bounce right of me and ran down the east sidelines right past the Ole Miss bench. After Cannon scored Ole Miss held the ball for the next 9.5 minutes and drove to a first down inside the LSU 5. The Tigers held for 4 downs with Cannon and Robinson stopping the OM QB Doug Elmore at the 1 with about 30 seconds to go. Goal line stand was also right in front of me in the south end. Certainly a game you never forget if you were fortunate enough to see it.

My father was there. He left his seat to go buy beer and had just got his beer when he heard the crowd erupt. He rushed to the entrance just in time to see Cannon in the end zone. So, he was at the game but missed the most famous TD in school history.
