The engineering school is top notch... If it isn't the best in the state its definitely top 2. The computer science is also very high. Like I said if they are better than LSU in 10 of a possible 50 categories who gives a shite....

You know why they want this?

University of North Carolina vs. NC State.

UNC is a better school.

Do the same with California

UC-Berkeley vs. Cal State

Go through the list

Washington
Virginia
Pennsylvania (private school) vs. Penn State
Illinois
Indiana
Alabama
Arkansas
Florida
Texas
Arizona

and so on.

The "University of" is almost always a better school than "State University"

It's more prestigious.

I think you are reaching with this one. It may be a coincidence for some schools, it certainly is not the rule.

Louisiana Tech has by far the best engineering program in the state. ULL isn't in this particular conversation.

I wish I were reaching, but it's true.

Would you rather go to UNC or NCState?

University of Virginia or Virginia State?
University of Washington or Washington State?
University of Alabama or Alabama State?

Think about it, then look a school rankings at US News and World Report.

Yes it is in the converse. I didn't say it was the one and only, said it could be and if not top 2. I think it is better than LSU and other than tech, lsu and ull there none of the others come close. Its besides the point anyways...

True statement. Only state schools that I can think of are:

Ohio St
Arizona St
Louisiana St.

Maybe this is the real reason that the state shot down UL in 84

This has nothing to do with tech. It is a technical school, so I would hope it would have a good engineering school. according to princeton review 08' LSU, Tech, Tulane, ULL all of which are in top 150 in the U.S. So, from year to the next depending on graduation etc... either one could be higher....

I still say its Ray Ray's fault!
The man was the president from 1976 until like 2 yrs ago. He wouldn't let the athletic depts set up a fund, like the TAF. He said any money they raised that way would go to the school first then they would get some of the money.... what an a-hole!

Yeah had Uncle Ray realized the importance that athletics play on a university, the school would be in a completely different place right now. Probably in CUSA with outstanding facilities and well paid coaches.

University of South Louisiana

that is the correct answer in my book.

University of South Louisiana = USL (the way it should be)

North Louisiana University = NLU (the way it should be)

nothing wrong with either school representing those parts of the state, while LSU is the flagship school..

It's not a matter of penis envy. It's mapping out a way to raise your university to the next level.

Beyond the sports and P.R. crap, you have a school that grew to the point where it was the second largest in the state, attracted a large international enrollment, and had a few programs that were able to put it on the educational map. While you're putting your efforts into getting your curriculum, research, and physical campus to the next level, an easy way to assist your efforts is to give yourself a name that doesn't restrict you to a lower status.

"Southwestern" equates to one quarter. You're limiting yourself to being a community campus for a small region of the state. Just as you'd dress for the job that you want, not the job that you have, changing your school's name to incorporate the entire state makes sense. And when you have the size to rationalize that name change, you'd be a fool not to rename.

The world knows the Lousiana State University as LSU or Louisiana State. Few are going to confuse the University of Louisiana or Louisiana Tech with LSU. I have never understood the "flagship" mentality of having one major university in Louisiana and one major university only. Being #1 doesn't mean shite if you're the only one.

To put it in football terms, it's embarrassing that LSU has to go out of state to fake up a rivalry with Arkansas. It's just as embarrassing for someone to ask about the number of major colleges in the state and for you to hold up one finger.

Well maybe if the other schools could be worthy competition we wouldn't have too.

Is it LSU fault that they are #1 Public University in the state? , NO every other public university should quit bitching a raw deal, and focus on their own schools rather then bitch and complain about LSU.

Ray knew it was important. He was just to damn proud to do anything about it. He didn't want to be known as an athletics first university. " I want to be a research institution" He single handidly set ULL back 30 yrs. Since Shychneider and Ray Ray have been gone an athletic fund has been set up to better the facilities and programs. But, they are going to have to bring in a better bball coach. Robert Lee sucks, he was good in hschool, but man he hasn't done crap. Baseball, Softball, and the other sports are in decent if not good hands....not sure about football either.... Time to spend some cash Cajuns!

Football is an embarrassment. Bustle should have been out 2 years ago.. Robert Lee took a program that was in back to back NCAA tournys and ran it into the ground. It wont change until ULL starts spending the money. I think Bustle makes like 175k. We are talking about a D1 head football coach here.

And I agree with that. There is nothing that ULL could ever do to raise them to LSU's standards of notoriety. It is just not going to happen. It isn't going to hurt LSU's 'flagship' status. When people think Louisiana, LSU will always come to mind. It is my opinion that having ULL referred to as UL would help their school, and in turn, help the state. JMO.

ULL is like the guy who keeps trying to give himself cool nicknames. Think of the Seinfeld when George tried to get everyone to call him "T-Bone" by repeatedly ordering T-Bones, but ended up getting called "Koko the Monkey Boy." If you have to insist on everyone calling you something then it's not genuine, and just makes the person insisting on being called "Spike" (or "Louisiana," in this case) look petty and insignigicant.

LSU fans can't see this because they are so insecure. We're not trying to take "flagship" status, just trying to better ourselves. I don't see why LSU fans hate that so much.
