His hype built up previous to that game

Woodson had already made a name for himself going into 97. then Michigan played a really high profile schedule (ND and Colorado OOC), had a nationally televised game damn near every week, and it seemed like he made a huge play in every 1 of their big games (Penn St, MSU, OSU). he was hard not to notice.

but yeah, a PR TD vs. Ohio State with the world watching? huge.

yup. hoping the Badger houses a punt, or takes what he wants from Trent and scores a TD. HB to NYC!

also had a pick in this game

Mathieu has a bunch of games to go to be mentioned. Certainly has a shot. LSU will need to play in a BCS game for him to have a shot, like Woodson

corner will never win unless he has some stats as a WR, sucks but the Heisman is pretty much guaranteed to a QB or RB these days.

The hype was there, and the media were waiting for something they could use to justify the vote for a defensive (utility) player. The punt return all but settled any debate. There were several very worthy offensive candidates that year including Manning and Leaf.

Woodson's Heisman has become more and more legitimate over time IMO since he has backed it up with a Hall of Fame NFL career.

ur right for some reason fumbles and fumble recoveries aren't viewed as "important" as plays well especially on offense but these are game changers hell int.>fumb or fumb rec

Clarrett should have won the award, didn't, and nothing he's done since his freshman year changes that. Neither does Woodson's phenomenal professional career.

I'm starting to think it's time to try someone else back there...maybe Landry

I'd say Shepard. I think he's got the combination of elusiveness and speed to be a great returner.

So people are mad as Shep for not catching the ball, but they want him to return punts?

Would love to see what Shepard could do, if he can field the ball effectively.
