Mathieu really hasn't shown much back there but returns are part luck, part skill. You gotta go with what they give you. I have thought the same thing though, about giving one of the young receivers a shot back there.

I haven't really seen a single opportunity to break one yet for him. I will say I think he does it at least once this year though. He is that good and just one punt with no hang time and a couple of good blocks and he's gone.

He at least needs some PR td's to be in serious contention.

Oddly enough, he only averaged 8.4 yards a return. That includes a long of 78, so a little over six yards per return besides that one.

Also, real stat of the day, as good as he was, he never had a pick-six at Michigan.

It wasn't stats that won Charles Woodson the Heisman.

Did Woodson cover kicks, and was he the main gunner on punt coverage?

Champ Bailey never won the Heisman. and he was a better 2 way player than CW

I don't know. Regardless, the award is pure publicity. It's not longer about anything else. The more TM gets on the biggest stages for these types of plays, the more likely he could at least be invited. An invitation for someone like that is the best we can hope for.

This is exactly what my friends and I were discussing after his TD vs kentucky.

Which is my point. It's not about his production on the field, it was the fact he played for Michigan.

Maybe just one. Woodson had one punt return TD, one rushing TD and two receiving TD's his Heisman year. Mathieu already has two defensive TD's this season.

If he were to get a punt return TD and another defensive TD against Alabama or in the SEC Championship, it would go a long way. It is important to perform in big games.

There was a specific moment Woodson won the Heisman. On national TV and with a load of media support. His hype built up previous to that game, but one return sealed the deal for him.

he had a pretty damn productive season and was certainly deserving of being there

stupid comparison anyway, nearly 15 years apart.

Of course he was a productive. He was a great player. It's not that he shouldn't have been invited, but if the criteria for a defensive player to be invited is production, TM is in that discussion without question. But the award isn't really about that, hence why few defensive players are invited, and even fewer can actually win. Suh didn't stand a chance.
