Safe to say both coaches inherited not the best of teams when Trent wound up at TCU and Johnny arrived at LSU...so what's each coach looking like almost 3 seasons in now?

Trent is 36-49 at TCU while being 3-40 against Big 12 teams including 14-6 this year, 1-6 in the Big 12.

Johnny is 55-30 at LSU while being 23-20 against SEC teams including 16-4 this year, 5-2 in the SEC.

Trent is still a trainwreck against conference teams, Johnny...seems to be improving, greatly.

I don't think anyone with a pulse really thinks TJ is a better coach for LSU than JJ. People mostly question his x's and o's acumen -- although given the lights out way he recruits, his alleged x's and o's deficiency may not matter

I still send TCU's AD thank you letters for paying LSU to take TJ off our hands

What a bunch of Grade A suckers

People can complain how LSU has gotten to 16-4, but it's impossible to ignore we're already 16-4 in year three

With players like Ben Simmons and Antonio Blackeney, throw in a Craig Victor, with hopefully one of Martin or Mickey. Hell maybe both. It wont matter who's coaching, roll the ball out

Another upvote.

JJ wasn't the coach I wanted LSU to hire. I thought we settled/politics.

Time will tell in the end, but I think JJ was a great hire.

Dont get me wrong, I am as big a critic of Johnny's in game coaching as anyone who pays attention to basketball, but these are pretty startling statistics. Johnny is doing a MUCH MUCH better job comparing each guy going forward.

Trent is pulling just what he did here and starting to get a talent starved thin team assembled up. He has just 1 guy coming in for next season (a mid 3-star) while losing 3 of his top 4 scorers after this season. His 1 "Star" recruit he has signed, Karviar Shepard (#68 overall in country in 2013) is in his sophomore season and averaging just 24.3 minutes a game with 6.7 points and 6.2 rebounds while struggling to shoot (44%) for a center. His best players are merely leftovers from the previous regime (who are about to leave).

Meanwhile JJ has a team with 3 NBA level players, bringing in at least 2 5-stars including the #1 overall player next year and likely another Top 50 prospect in JaQuan Lyle. It looks like JJ will lose 1-3 players after this season, so he likely will replace at least everyone that is leaving, if not be able to build a complete 12-13 man roster. Compare Karviar Shepard to Mickey, Martin or Quarterman and it's almost laughable the difference. They are all the same class too.

No question johnny has been better at lsu.

But in fairness to trent, he took over the doormat of the big 12 and a dumpster fire of a team. Johnny took over an nit team.

Still, johnny is leaps and bounds better for us. X's and O's give me trent. Recruiting give me johnny.

1. I'm not convinced Trent was even worth a damn with X's and O's. He won 5 SEC games over 2 years for crying out loud. If he was that good he would have won a few more than that.

2. Granted johnny took over an NIT team from the year before, they seriously lacked talent. Two undersized guards that were decent players and a tuba player made up 60% of his starting line up his first season.

I was shocked when TCU hired Trent away from us! He coaches a BORING team.

this is so stupid. our fans only say this because trent was such a terrible recruiter and his teams played a boring style of basketball. just because the game is slowed down doesn't mean their fundamentals are any better or the offense is being run more efficiently.

a great X's and O's coach wouldn't be 15-76 in conference play since the 2009-2010 season.

LSU basketball in 40 years has never been as bare talent wise as when Trent was here. NEVER. He literally had no talent coming in to replace anyone that left. It seemed like he had 6 total players at all times. No matter what he could do coaching, you cannot win that way. Johnny did exactly what needed to be done to get talent here and LSU basketball is slowly returning where it had sunk so very low for so long.

I don't know if you remember the TJ era correctly or you just feel that negatively about Johnny's coaching abilities

Johnny has killed it on the recruiting trail and has made some high quality assistant coaching hires. Trent sucked arse in both of those departments.

I think he's getting a bad wrap on the fundamentals stuff, if you watch much CBB lately it seems to be a problem all over and not just a Johnny Jones problem.
