Through some bumps and bruises, maybe we finally found our secondary tonight

The secondary played well at times, especially in the first half, and looked totally lost at others. Considering the difficulty of this offensive scheme and how good WKU is at running it, I'm surprised we held them as well as we did.
I know we had White out tonight, and had to play guys like Paris and Jackson more than we normally would. It seemed to me that this game separated the contenders from the pretenders. It looks like Rickey Jefferson finally messed up enough to lose his spot to Thompson and Jackson.
Next up is Ed Paris. Yikes. He doesn't look good at all at corner right now, and will probably head back to the bench, along with Jefferson.
Dontae Jackson stepped up when called upon tonight. He did make a couple of mistakes in coverage, but his dynamic athleticism was evident on the overturned fumble. Even if it is in a reserve roll behind Thompson, he's going to be getting meaningful snaps going forward.
Mills is the big enigma at this point. He made a couple of plays out there tonight, but he is obviously still limited.
Thomas is still hit and miss. He played better last week, but was kind of meh again this week. Hopefully him moving back to Dime/Blitz back will get him in the groove again. He has this going for him- for all his shakiness, he's still a hell of a lot better than Paris.
I think the lineup for the stretch run looks like this.
CB:
White and Toliver (pretty obvious)
Safety
Adams, Thompson, Battle, and Jackson (Mills may play some here when we go 4-3, as well)
Nickel
Mills
Dime
Thomas or Jackson
If Mills can get fully healthy and Thompson and Jackson can man the fort at safety, then maybe we can be good enough to make defensive improvements down the stretch.

He's played all season. Just not as much as Jefferson. Oddly enough, Jefferson was the "pleasant surprise" though the first 3-4 games. Boy have those wheels come off now.

Tolliver is such a freaking beast. The announcers rarely talk about him because he doesn't get any balls thrown his way

Right about Jackson. He is going to make mistakes, but he is a playmaker. He is going to have some big plays down the stretch. Considering the alternatives, I don't think the staff keeps him off the field at this point.
Also, he looked damn good as a punt returner tonight, too. He did better there than he did on kickoffs. That return he had that was called back was very good.

Another thing to think about is when LSU goes to the dime package, Adams plays the "money" position which is basically like a WLB, Debo moves to " Mack"/MLB and Beckwith drops down to a stand up edge rusher.
I think they should sub out Rickey when they go to nickle and dime and go with Battle and Thompson.

I agree. I don't think we are going to see much of Jefferson, unless he redeems himself over the open date practices. But I also agree that maybe Battle is better in coverage than Adams. Adams can be too aggressive.

Jefferson is lost in transitions and switches
Especially against flood routes on his side
He is guessing where to go and he guesses wrong way too often

To make matters worse for him and LSU, he also struggled against the run.
Not the time of the year you want to realize the safety you've given all the playing time to is not cut out for the job.
We had 4 DBs in to finish the first half in our dime package that have not seen any significant playing time this year--- Battle, Thompson, Paris, and Mills. The other two, Adams and Thomas, were out of their natural positions.
They were reaching for answers late, even resorting to 3 LB sets. I saw Alexander spread out to cover a wideout on two occasions. I don't want to sound doom and gloom, but not the ideal point of the season to be searching for the right combinations.
When Bama's back was against the wall w 6 minutes left today, they looked for favorable matchups on the outside. Should be interesting to say the least come Nov 7th.

The saving grace there could be that, with White back and Toliver playing well, we should hold our own on the outside. I'm more concerned about the stuff across the middle that teams have had a lot of success with.

Do you have reason to believe White will play?
I haven't seen Bama utilize those routes b/w the hashes much this season. Not sure they trust Coker enough. Plenty of back shoulder throws though.
Beckwith had Cooper hearing footsteps last year. I kept waiting for him to show up tonight across the middle, but he was attempting to apply pressure that rarely did.

Yes, I realize it was late and out of reach.
I don't see where that changes the fact that we changed our scheme.
I've seen us use Debo in coverage that way, but I think he and Beckwith were both already out there. I will have to confirm that when I rewatch tmrw.

I disagree with some of what you said but fact is the dbs are not progressing. AnD they haven't improved since last year. The majority of schools in the sec would die to have half the talent (as in hs recruits) we have in the secondary and yet we're having problems.

I'm going to make a thread that goes more in depth on this, but anyway..
Toliver is going to be the next prolific corner similar to the level of PP. Jalen Collins was strong but he didn't really sparkle. He had great speed. If White comes back, I think they'll trade places. Toliver has the height and weight to cover the X receiver. White is more like Collins and should be covering the Z receiver.
Not trying to justify the performance, but this was the best QB we'll see all year. Not receivers. He was able to check at the line, read zones, and make tight passes. We ran a lot of man and I noticed a lot of corners(in particular Ed Paris) was getting beat at the line. Kind of like TQ last year but the opposite. They abused the slant route quite often not because they weren't pressing but because they weren't jamming then. And Alabama and specifically Kiffen loves to exploit that. He did it a bunch with AC last year. The back end has been questionable. Mills return will certainly help. I think we'll some rotation before the BAMA game but I can't say what it'll be. Mills defended passes on an island well. Might move him to the Y receiver (slot)

Coker is mobile but definitely not a runner. Disrupt the pocket and force him out where our speed can take advantage.
