The rationale is that the Tigers name came from the Louisiana Tigers the name of a regiment from Louisiana that fought for the Confederacy.
It actually didnt. Just inadvertently got referenced that way in speech because of the recent war.

Actually think it's a little of both.
From LSUsports.net

quote:

It was the custom at that time, for some occult reason, to call football teams by the names of vicious animals; the Yale Bulldogs and the Princeton Tigers, for example. This is still the vogue. It struck me that purple and gold looked Tigerish enough and I suggested that we choose “Louisiana Tigers,” all in conference with the boys. The Louisiana Tigers had represented the state in Civil War and had been known for their hard fighting. This name was applied collectively to the New Orleans Zouaves, the Donaldsonville Cannoniers, and to a number of other Louisiana companies sent to Virginia, who seemed to have the faculty of getting into the hardest part of the fighting and staying there, most of them permanently. One company I knew of went in 200 strong; only 28 returned and many of these were wounded.

SIMPLE SOLUTION...IGNORE THIS shite!

You couldn't be more wrong about it. If the opponents of an idea are quiet then the decision makers will only hear the rabid Left's wailing and crying.

We need to be prepared to defend our ideals, culture, history, and way of life because if you haven't noticed it's under attack thanks to people thinking "IGNORE THIS shite" instead of actually doing something.

We have a problem and ignoring it won't make it go away.

Pulled this gem off of their want ad for a "Trust & Work Lead" job title.

Complaining and being a professional victim is easier than holding down a real job or having real responsibilities. There are a whole lot of people in the world suffering under conditions not unlike slavery. They need to put muscle behind their words and save those people.

I am sure they would, if those places had better internet reception and air conditioning.

We have a real need in this country for an Israel type mandatory draft.

I knew this was coming. I only pray that I never see the day that LSU caves in and changes the mascot.

I agree that ignoring this won't make it go away. Those pushing for this are zealots, misguided zealots, but none the less zealots. Ignoring them only emboldens them. They will not just go away quietly into the night. All true LSU Tiger fans should let their feelings be known on this matter.

There is no chance this petition goes anywhere so I don't know why people are getting all hot and bothered over it.

Because there's still anger and resentment from the removal of the statues and the gutting of history.

If there's one thing in Louisiana that is more sacred than any statue, court house rule, or political idea, its the LSU Tigers. law makers would never touch it, IMO. That would be suicide in a losing effort for anyone to bring that bill or propose a change.

I for one and sick and tired of it and will go to war before they take away our beloved Fighting Tigers. Everyone is offended by something these days and most of it stems from their parents not tearing their asses up when they were kids.

"I'd just argue that every other school with a Tiger mascot has to change too."

Tiger Woods must change his name also... Grambling has to change to.

I get so sick of hearing about racism and how blacks were mistreated during slavery when my people were just slaughtered and forced to live on poverty stricken reservations with little to no help even to this day

How am I insulting anyone by putting the mascot selection into historical context? This is what's wrong today. Anyone who takes note of historical facts is accused of insulting people.

How about school team names that are racially exclusionary: ULL Ragin' Cajuns (named after whites of French descent whose ancestors immigrated from Canada); the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame (no explanation needed), USC Trojans (extinct white folks), West Virginia Mountaineers (white English settlers in Appalachia), Oklahoma Sooners (white settlers of shall we say questionable ethics), and Tennessee Volunteers (white soldiers participating in an anti-Mexican military invasion of Mexico, under the leadership of white slave-owning officers, at the behest of white slave-holding politicians), and last but not least, Ole Miss Rebels (despite the bear, the origins are clear).

Do these other schools also contribute the naming of their macost to a group of confederate soldiers fighting to keep slaves?
