I'm with you -- Baseball should be much higher on the scholarship count.

But your attendance stat is over 16 games. Which averages to about 22,000 per game. 8 teams fan bases make up that total (plus true fans of the sport)

Lacrosse, on the other hand, got a total of 59501 for its 2 semi finals games and 1 final game. Which comes out to 19,800 per game. Which is only for 4 teams fan bases + true fans of the sport. Its not THAT much lower all things considered.

Moreover, Baseball's attendance this year was one of the highest in many years.

For the record, I want baseball to have more scholarships. It is really, really dumb that it doesn't.

My original point was because LSU makes up so much of the attendance (even in years they don't go), maybe we should get a scholarship bump -- clearly, a failed joke.

I don't believe that is correct. My daughter played D2 soccer and most of the players were on partials.

I don't know the details but my understanding of Title IX is that for every male sport offered there must be a female sport offered.

Div II as a whole doesn't fund nearly as many scholarships as Div I

Title IX

But they aren't just women, they are athletes.

That would probably be worse honestly, it would just lead to Alabama using 90% of their scholarships on football and the rest of the country would follow suit with the hope of keeping pace.

So what? Every school would have choices to make.

So, that means pretty much every other sport suffers.

I really couldn't tell you the specifics of how it works, I was simply responding to the posters assertion that all women are getting full rides while many guys are on partials. My daughter had a job on the side while playing soccer and going to school full time.

I watched the championship. It was at the stadium in Foxboro. They had a good 25,000 or so in the building.

I'd love it for LSU to have a lacrosse team. To find the equal scholarships I don't even know what sports for women we could add. Wrestling? Curling? Pole-dancing? We've got practically everything conceivable covered.

Title IX is idiotic. The culture has long since caught up with that law. Nobody will kill women's sports now.

For those who are unaware, Title IX mandates that every school must offer the same number of men's and women's athletic scholarships as the proportion of male and female students at the university. Since most schools are close to 50% each, then the number of total scholarships is equal.

Football takes 85.

The trend is for most colleges to have considerably more women than men now. I want to say nationwide it was 57-43 female on American campuses and growing.

That constitutes a considerable threat to men's athletics, which specifically constitutes a threat to baseball.

Football shouldn't be counted for at least two reasons:

It funds all the rest of the sports

and

There is nothing in the rules that says it's men only

Agreed on both accounts.

Perhaps make the number of football scholarships that "count" equal to the highest number of female scholarships in a given sport on that campus. Track & Field at 18 is the highest female sport...

Title IX

Title IX is the excuse the NCAA uses to level the playing field, but in a free market a school could allocate scholarships as they so choose and comply with the law.

A free market doesn't and can't apply to college athletics because you're not buying players (legally at least).

In a free market schools could allocate resources as they see fit.

Could you imagine if there was a group who limited music scholarships, engineering scholarships, or scholarships for other disciplines?

They limit scholarships to save money. It's plain and simple. Title IX is an excuse.

Btw, you buy players in the sense that you try and steer them to your school with inducements. The partial scholarship is an inducement. A full schollie is more. Better coaching is another inducement, and so is being seen on TV. Better training facilities is another way to entice players.

And the free market works to the extent allowed by the rules.

As I said earlier in this thread, if you don't have scholarships set aside for specific sports, you're back to the Bear Bryant days of Alabama football where the baseball and track programs are used to give more scholarships to football players.

That would destroy college athletics.
