It's obvious that the LSU defense showed great improvement as the season progressed. That puts a big smile on my face. In your opinion what were the two greatest improvements on defense this year?

I'm going with:

1. Beckwith getting the starting position at middle linebacker. The guy played in beastmode from the time he won the starting position.

2. Shoring up the DT position by getting Quentin Thomas back from injury and the young guys along the line gaining experience.

Those IMO were the biggest factors to an improving defense. Other factors that come quickly to mind was Danielle Hunter's improvement. I thought he played much better toward the end of the season (which makes me sad because it give him more reason to leave early). And I don't want to leave out Jamal Adams. Jamal was bad arse all year. And the secondary who played at a very high level all year long.

Funny how people we saying this team didn't improve at all around mid season but we ended up with the number1 defense in the SEC game.

1. players started buying into Chavis

2. After Auburn there was never a moment where I felt the team quit. They just didn't show up to Arky.

Defense showed up just like they did against Bama in the MNC game. Offense and special teams were the no-shows.

Defense was awesome against Arky. They gave up 17 points and less than 250 yards. The game was 10-0 until close to the end.

The defense was incredible for the whole second half of the season after the DTs came around and Beckwith and Adams were inserted.

Thomas had little to do with the DTs coming along. He barely played. Godchaux and Lacouture really came of age

it is pretty much Beckwith starting at MLB and the fast maturity of the DL...Once the DL figured it out and matured it got dangerous for other offenses

I'll throw in depth in the defensive backfield. We lost a couple of key players, and the reserves stepped in without missing a beat.

The middle was very weak due to 3 factors

1) Beckwith not showing the mentality needed to play over Welter, and when he did, that was the biggest thing.

2) Suring up the middle Godchaux got a lot better and Thomas and other aided. 91 got mildly better, but was still far less than typical for an LSU interior DT, but overall the unit progressed to be much better than before.

3) Jamal is a beast.

These 3 changes/adjustments made 90% of the difference in the play of the D.

I agree with you. Beckwith will probably make some all American teams before he leaves LSU. We are going to look back and ask why did it take so long for him to start. Young Defensive tackles gradually improving, but a lot of that was helped by better end play, helping to stop the run.

I actually think 2 should be moved to 3 and the new 2 should be Jamal Adams becoming the "Brandon Taylor." We have missed a guy like that since he left LSU. It made and makes a huge difference. Jamal cleans up read runs and bubble screens like a champion.

Also he is heady in a way that a guy like Vadal Alexander (though much older) is not.

Gumbopot, I think you nailed it more or less. Beckwith from UF on was great...before that he was lost. Welter was usually in position but would miss the tackle or get dragged for a few yards. Beckwith always made the play but was often not near it. He figured it out and maybe a All American type next year.

The DTs figured it out with experience after AUB as well. CL and DG got experience and learned from it. QT was basically hurt all year from my view which explains why he didn't contribute much but when healthy can be a stud as a 5th year senior.

I think the DE's actually played well all year, but they looked very good once the DTs and Beckwith figured it out. I don't think this is a coincidence.

The DBs were very good all year...the loss of Thomas hurt and the emergence of Adams helped. Overall White, the Jalens, Martin, and Jefferson along with Robinson were very good.
