Clearly not a valid fair catch signal.

It wasn't a fair catch.
From the 2011 rule book -
He did not raise his hand above his head.
*Derp* Someone's PDF loaded faster than mine did

The bad call was the spot on the fake field goal. No way he got that.
His butt hit the ground a good yard from the first down marker.

Dude was spinning records not calling for a fair catch.. What was up with the announcers not saying anything about it either?? Thats an easy screw up to see.

They screwed that fair catch call up as I suspected...I can't believe there are people on here defending that was a fair catch.
The announcers snowed everyone over by saying, "we called some guy (expert), and he said that was a valid fair catch." :coughbullshit:

Yep. It was a bad call. I was a little mad when it happened, but so much else was going wrong, it was hard to get too worked up.
And the announcers were awful. I just think they didn't know the rule and were trying to quickly move on before the audience realized that.

FWIW...
Wife and I are in stands with binoculars (VERY HIGH), and she happens to be watching head official when game goes to TV break right after PF for the fair catch play. She says, "You aren't gonna believe this. The line judge just walked over to head official with the white hat and told him that that was a really bad call, man. Head official says 'what do you want me to do about it, it's done.'
I WAS surprised by that exchange.

I was shocked that more wasn't said about that. He was about a half-yard short of where they spotted them.

The spot was very generous to the gumps but they got their FG block on that series anyway....
The fair catch call was more clearly a bad call than the fake FG spot and probably had a bigger effect on the the game.

Regardless of how much we didn't like the call, it was the right one. You wouldn't use it as an example of how to signal for a fair catch, it was valid. If he would've returned it for a TD we would be screaming that he signaled fair catch.

Was watching the game with a high school ref and he said that you clearly have to wave your hand ABOVE your head for a fair catch. The spot on the fake field goal was very generous. With all of that being said, none of that made a difference in this game.

So your wife can read lips from the upper deck?

What made it the right call?! According to the rules that was clearly a bad call.

I bet the floor under Musberger was sticky by the time the game ended.

It's because most people have seen such bad calls in college football games that they accept the lame explanations without actually knowing the game and the rules. I remember having a discussion with an Auburn fan the year the pass interference call against Auburn was waved off. He was so sure it was an uncatchable ball.

Most balls are when somebody's climbing on your back.
