Not that it would have made any difference in the game at all but did anyone else think this call was total bullshite? And the announcers did about as poor of a job as they could explaining why it wasn't?

It's one of those ones where I can see why they would and wouldn't call a penalty.

The bad call was the spot on the fake field goal. No way he got that.

I thought you had to put your hand over your head to signal fair catch. He clearly didn't do that. Does anyone know the actual rule as to what is the appropriate fair catch signal? Because it surely wasn't explained during the game.

It was a fair catch...a quick motion, but still a fair catch. My problem is with Brooks. It looks like he realizes it's going to be a penalty but hits him anyway with his arms by his side.

i think i saw something about that in the NFL a while back... not sure about NCAA, but yeah you have to waive your hand above your head.

The gump's hand never got above his shoulder pad.

i dont think there was the perfect camera angle that provided an obvious spot. It sure looked like he was short, but htere wasnt indisputable evidence.

Yes horrible spot. And it should have been obvious as F they were faking.

Oh and yes it was a good call on the punt....#68 on the stupid plays by LSU on Monday night.

He waved his hand off to his right side and relatively early. I thought your hand had to be over your head. Commentator said they asked their replay/officiating/penalty expert about the signal and he said it was a legal signal and a good penalty call.

from the 2011 rules:

Valid Signal
ARTICLE 2. A valid signal is a signal given by a player of Team B who has obviously signaled his intention by extending one hand only clearly above his head and waving that hand from side to side of his body more than once.
Invalid Signal
ARTICLE 3. An invalid signal is any waving signal by a player of Team B:
a. That does not meet the requirements of Article 2 (above); or
b. That is given after a scrimmage kick is caught beyond the neutral zone, strikes the ground or touches another player beyond the neutral zone (A.R. 6-5-3-III-V); or
c. That is given after a free kick is caught, strikes the ground or touches another player.

Sticking your arm out to the side and flapping it like a wounded duck is NOT calling for a fair catch.
