I think Florida fans are the closest match to our fanbase in the SEC. Minus the jorts... That's why the games are always so emotional and exciting! Wouldn't change it at all.

Not really.

From the first game in '37 to the 1989 season the series record was 18-15-3 for a .542 win%, 16-15-3 since WWII (.515 win%). Not exactly 'ownership'.
why you wanna go all factual on me, brah?

LSU's REAL rival from the East was actually Kentucky. Before the SEC split into divisions, LSU had played Kentucky more than any other "new" Eastern Division school, including Florida and Georgia.

First of all, KY WAS LSU's "permanent rival" from the East, along with UF. The sandy vagina crowd got them to change in 2003 to only having one permanent cross-division rival and KY was dropped in favor of UF. But from 1992-2002 both UF and UK were LSU's cross-division rivals.

Also, I'm counting 38 games vs UF from 1937-1991 compared to 42 games vs KY in the same time span.

42 vs 38.

I mean, really. That's not that big a difference. Both UF and UK were on the Tiger's schedule almost every year from 1950-1991.

Had this game not been LSU's permanent East rivalry since the division split in 1992, LSU may very well have had 2 to 4 more appearances in Atlanta and perhaps a few more conference titles.

Truth ... And the recruiting wars!

Florida is the SEC's premier program when it gets rolling due to their rich recruiting. They're down now, but won't stay there long!

If LSU has a rivalry, it's no doubt Florida

That's why there is a SEC title game. Shouldn't have to play the same team twice to prove you're good. Good chance you could split those matchups, e.g. Tennessee and LSU in 2001

Don't take it personally, I'm taking Marshy to task too.

You'd think that LSU would've been all over a team that had never won a title, but for some reason UF always played LSU tough.

Of course, in your favor, you did say "before Spurrier", so that could be interpreted to mean pre-1964 in which case the record would be 8-4-1 in LSU's favor, a much more respectable .654 win%, outscoring the gators, on average, 15-9.

It's all good. I don't have a problem with UF but I do have a problem with the SEC saying UF was more of a rival.

Just another example of the SEC trying to keep LSU down.

x1000. I really got started watching at the end of Dinardo's (and Ditka's ) time here...

To respond to thread, it's been significant with the success both programs have had over the last decade. If anything the importance of the game has been built up by the successes of the teams since it was made permanent in '92, and even more so since the last decade of LSU Football.

In terms of rivals, it seems that Tiger fans don't hate anyone more than the team they're playing next.

But if hatred defines a rivalry, it's Tulane hands down. Want proof? Start a thread stating that Tulane is LSU's rival. The hatred and outrage is astounding whenever this topic comes up. What's really funny is how passionate LSU fans can be in denying the rivalry - me thinks they doth protest too much. If it weren't, they wouldn't really have much to say on the subject.

But I put rivalries in different categories. Think about it, who would you hate losing to more, Ole Miss or Alabama? Who would you like beating more Ole Miss or Alabama? And yes, I see those as two different questions.

Consequently, UF as LSU's permanent opponent gives LSU a harder road each year to the SECCG than every other West School (Ole Miss gets Vandy, MSU gets UK, Ark gets South Carolina, etc given UF has traditionally had a higher ranking than most other east schools).

I don't disagree, but I'd like to point out that LSU has as many SEC title game appearances (4) as Ole Miss (0), Miss State (1) and Arkansas (3) combined.

I like playing Florida every. It really helps push the image of LSU nationally to play this game. They are the Big Dog in the East, and it is a great challenge to play them.

Anybody complaining about playing FLA EVERY year is a fool.

My wife is a Gator so it is a lot of fun in my house every year. The 1990's completely sucked except for 1997. I was fortunate enough to road trip to Baton Rouge to attend that game. Living in Orlando, it is awesome when LSU wins the game.

Some odd streaks and games in the 'pre-Spurrier' era. From 1980 to 1986 the home team didn't win a game. When Spurrier was QB from '64-'66 Florida won all 3 but the next year in Gainesville ,LSU creamed them 37-6. Florida won 3 in a row from '74-'76 then LSU won 4 in a row from '77-'80.

Gator fans I know love coming to Tiger Stadium games, even with our rabid atmosphere.

Mississippi State, or Ole Miss sure as hell weren't going to play Florida every season.

why is it that no one remembers that Florida wasn't exactly a powerhouse back then?

at the time of expansion, they had 1 freaking SEC title in their history.

people expected Spurrier to give the a boost, but no one predicted they would go on a 2 decade + run of dominance like they have.

you can't look back at expansion in '92 and act like those decisions were made knowing what we know in 2011.

AND i went to what is arguably one of the best games in lsu history, LSU/UF 07

One of the best regular season NCAA games in history. Also, one of the best gameday experiences in NCAA history.

It's almost impossible to overstate how good that game was. It featured, from a raw talent stand point, 2 of the best teams of the decade. The core players of those teams won 3 straight BCS trophies, and were the 1-2 teams in the best conference for 3 or 4 years straight.

When they beat us 58-3, we weren't rivals.

That was '93. But as early as '84 Liffort Hobley (one of the best DB's to ever wear P&G) said that UF was a bigger rival than Ole Miss.

We didn't offer much competition during the Spurrier years and since UF has FSU, UGA, and Tenn we won't be their main rival but it's a huge game every year.

"If the whole point was to have a "permanent rival" then why weren't the 41 games played vs UK more important than the 35 games played vs Florida prior to 1992?"

This was the exact reason that the idea of giving up the Tennessee Alabama annual rivalry was mentioned by the SEC Main Office to both schools....It was simply not going to happen given these are the #1 and #2 schools in the conference as far as winning % goes. No giving up of the UT-UA rivalry meant a permanent UF game for LSU while every other west school landed a much softer annual East opponent.

Say what you want about the LSU-Florida being great rivalry...It is not a "natural" rivalry like AU-UGA, UA-UT, UGA-UF. LSU ended up with an embarassing 2-14 record in the stretch from 1988-2002 because of Joe Dean's shi*ty football hires.

Right now, very few people without gray hair are cognizant of the fact that nationally LSU was perceived as a MUCH better program than UF pre-Spurrier.
