Yep. I've spent a lot of time in So Cal. In fact, funny story, I was on the USC Keck Medical School campus the day that LSU leap-frogged USC in the BCS rankings in 2003 and, by and large, the majority of the folks there didn't really give a damn. Most were oblivious to it, and I was ON CAMPUS.

Yes, it is a good job in a cool, talent-rich state, but the fan support isn't that great.

LSU is one of the top jobs due to fan support, the commitment to the program and, most importantly, being the only power 5 school in one of the most talent rich states in the country, not to mention being next door to possibly THE most talent rich state in the country. I'm not going to try to shoehorn LSU into an arbitrary top 5, there are other schools with similar situations. Florida probably needs to be in that list. Honestly, an argument could be made that LSU is a better job than Alabama. They have the tradition and the support, it is one of the top jobs, but between Stallings and Saban it kind of sucked and it does not have the inherent in-state recruiting advantages that exist at LSU. Alabama HAS to recruit out of state talent. Without a top recruiter like Saban, Alabama would be on par with Auburn.

L.A. ain't what it used to be. Have you seen pictures of it lately? Besides, USC fans are only aware of the Trojans when they're contending for national titles. Until then, they don't really care

Not only is La a homeless wasteland at the moment, but USC is in arguably the worst part of town, and wasn’t it just a few years ago where it came out they basically feed the football team w/ pizza and fast food since they have no athletic facilities w/ a kitchen ?

Top 5. Win a championship, recruiting hotbed, get paid.

This is pretty close to the truth. If you want a beautiful campus in L.A., go to UCLA. Want to get shot? Walk a block or two off of USC's campus.

Baton Rouge is not necessarily "happening" town.

If a coach wins big, he creates the happenings in BR

1. Alabama - T-town. Top salary, best coach in history
2. tOSU - whoever goes there simply wins titles from the get go
3. LSU - every coach since 2000 has won it all. Isnt that why you go into coaching? Plus, no competition in-state for recruits
4. Oklahoma - similar to OSU mystique but in the Big 12. Moving to the SEC presents a new challenge
5. USC - celebrities, So. Cal., plus a weak conf

Others
Texas - Has simply fallen too hard since Mack Brown. Huge expectations, unlimited $$ and resources, and yet little success. Revolving door
Notre Dame & Michigan - great brands and history, but are very particular with hires. So not really a top destination for all coaches

For a coach that wants to build a dynasty, LSU is one of the only places with a real shot at doing it. Saban is 70 years old. The sun is getting low big guy...

A top level coach could come in here right now, spend three years working it up, Saban step out, and dominate the landscape for some time to come.

Personally, I think Woodward is going for Dabo. The dude could do it.

Would you objectively consider LSU a top 5 job in college football?

Yes

1) Talent rich state
2) Only power 5 in the state
3) SEC
4) Wiling to spend money on coaches and staff
5) Recent championships
6) Rabid fanbase and support

My top 5:
1) Texas
2) ND
3) Ohio State
4) LSU
5) UGA

Next 5: aTm, Clemson, Florida, Michigan, Oklahoma

I don't think the PAC12 has enough fan support for any of them to be in the top 10 aside from Oregon. I don't think Bama is a good job because you are in a crappy little city in a state with minimal high school talent and you have AU in state with you. Bama just looks attractive because Saban is the GOAT.

My only knock on the LSU job is that Baton Rouge kind of sucks compared to some other college towns.

1. Alabama
2. Texas
3. USC
4. Ohio State
5. LSU

USC has first pick of California when it being run right. Look around the SEC every top s hook is benifiting from a down USC. From QB’s to Coaches.

You are thinking about the wrong things that make it a top 5 job.

When you say job, you are talking about attracting talented coaches.

Why would coaches want to coach here?

Coaches don't really give a frick if there is a beach close by when you can pay them elite money. What is so fricking special about Tuscaloosa? Nothing other than 1 thing.....

So you have to consider WHY a coach wants to come and what the coach can do.

What they cant do is build a dynasty just anywhere.

Simply put, LSU is such a spot among very few spots do do such.

This is why LSU is a top 5 spot. It has the unique intangibles to build what Saban is currently doing at Bama.

Yeah it's clearly not a top 5 job.

It's possibly a top 10 job.

Each of our last three coaches won national championships, and two of them were incompetent. People can no longer argue that LSU is not one of the top jobs in college football.

Last 3 coaches have won championships. I’d say if not top 5 it’s very close. Geography and weather may be a downfall.

No Notre Dame or Florida?

Notre Dame is kind of unique.
For some coaches Notre Dame is the ultimate (especially Catholics)
