Tailgate Antenna Question

What's a good antenna to get for tailgating. We are students and can't afford a satellite. We really only care about ABC and CBS so we can watch those games. Thanks!

I'd probably go with one that has wires to connect it to the TV, but that's just me.
Does anybody know how to google anymore?

I was thinking more along the lines of a specific model that works for them or they know works.

While I'm sure you chuckled to yourself at your immense humor when typing this response. It is a worth while question to ask since many antennas don't work as well on campus and some insight can be helpful.
I can tell you that we tried both an HD antenna for about $35 and rabbit ear antenna ($16) and we were not able to pick up CBS on either one. ABC and NBC come in fine but not CBS.

Message boards are a great tool for getting reviews of products that are available locally.
The technology has come a long way and there are pretty cheap HD options available at Best Buy and Wally World. Philips makes several models of Indoor/Outdoor antennas that are carried at Wal-Mart for around $20-$60. Make sure that the antenna is compatible with your tv before buying and be prepared to need an AC Adapter for power.
Also this LINK is great for giving you more insight of what hardware you may need or if channels are even available where you tailgate. Don't want to throw your money away.

I don't remember the brand but I used one a few times that worked really well on campus. I do remember that it had a power cord that plugged into a regular power outlet. Don't get the cheapest thing you can find at Walmart because it likely won't work very well.

Amazon Antenna
This one has worked for me perfectly fine. It worked 10x better in a tailgate setting than the $75 leaf antenna I've used

Why not stream it through student wi-fi w/ espn, abc & cbs apps?
Can't get much cheaper than that!!!!

I got the powered Mohu leaf, and it really isn't any better than my $9 set of rabbit ears. Just get those from Radio Shack or something.

If remember correctly the tv towers are actually pretty far from campus. So the basic rabbit ears are not going to get a good signal. For about $100 you can get a long range hd antenna.

any cheap antennae will work. ABC will be great, CBS requires the user to be smarter than the device. Here is what we do:
Set up your antennae and search over the air channels by using your tv's menu. once done, look and see if your tv found channel 9-1 (this is the over the air CBS station) If it did not, randomly move your antennae over a foot in any direction and repeat the channel search. Keep doing this until your tv finds 9-1. it may take a while. Once your tv finds the station then select that channel. it may be partial reception, pixelated, or no reception at all. Since your tv has found that station, simply have someone move it around until you get a solid hd signal.
once success is acheived (this is the most important part) make an announcement stating any drunk arse that bumps the antennae and loses the signal will get pummeled like david duke at soul train

A few things we've learned over the years:
- Basic $15 HD Antenna will work. We "hook" ours into the metal tent frame and it appears to use that as additional support.
- Wifi will work in the morning for gameday via WatchESPN, but as the day goes on and more people are connected to the network via their phones, etc. it slows to a crawl.

I've had good luck with rabbit ears or a cheap directional hooked to a good amp like:

Make sure and get a good quality amp as some are junk.

Have seen multiple A/V reviews that the 30/non-powered provides better results than the powered version.

I got an HD antenna from Best Buy for like $20 a few years back. It's flat and white, about the size of an iPad. Has one wire that hooks directly to your cable connection on the tv. Works perfectly!

You need an amplified directional antenna similar to this.
