Obviously in context this wasn’t as bad as some of the other losses, but this loss was bad for several reasons:

- LSU was ranked #6, highest in a long time, playing a SEC game at night in Tiger Stadium, national TV, and had legitimate SEC and probably national title hopes

- UGA was starting a freshman, former baseball player, running QB with potential but at that point in his career it was debatable about if he would ever be a good enough passer to be a great QB.

- Even with the high ranking LSU was looking a little shaky on defense but this was the perfect game to figure it out.

Of course Carter destroys us, Champ Bailey puts on the finishing touches, and everything went downhill from there. Walking out of Tiger Stadium that night I was convinced Carter was the evolutionary Randall Cunningham. Of course over the next 2 months I realized I could have played QB and thrown for at least 200 yards against LSU that year. I really believe Tepper and that game is the primary reason Carter got drafted and paid.

Tepper made many offensive opponents look good.

Ole Miss 1997.

Seemed like the team went back to sleepwalking again in the 2nd half after the previous week.

God revealed to me in tongue and interpretation that if anyone wears the Rock in Gold "tshirt" from the 1998 Georgia game this year that LSU will not make the Playoffs.

Yes he did. What I remember most about this game is thinking, "Yes our defense has looked a little shaky in its first 3 games, but those were games LSU knew they would win anyway and was using them to try out things before SEC play. And since the magic is back now, no way a freshman QB making his first road start in Tiger Stadium on a Saturday night in front of a sellout crowd could pull this off."

By the end of the season we all realized the truth.

Also here are Carter's stats from this game:

Passing: 27-34-0-318
Rushing: 14-41
Receiving: 1-36

Almost 400 yards of total offense in the days before everyone went spread.

I actually remember that game clearly. Was watching with a UGA friend here in Atlanta.

Was frustrated the entire game wondering why we weren't trying to put any pressure on Quincy Carter. Young QB in a hostile environment, and we just let him sit back there with all day to throw.

It was the beginning of the end for Tepper.

I was at that game, and I remember the large amount of Georgia fans that day. They were everywhere, taking over the dining area at Mike Anderson's. The stadium was an awful shade of red from where I sat in the South Stadium stands. It was not a good day.

why in the hell would this be brought up in it's own thread???

It was 18 years ago, a BAD MEMORY, and I was THERE... no need to relive it. Why not bring up a GOOD memory?

Because some young folks aren't convinced we are still in the golden era of LSU football.

You are correct, but I think this game is unique because: while it was an upset (UGA was also undefeated and ranked #12), it wasn't a massive, inexcusable one like the Houston, USM, Co. State games, it wasn't a soul crushing blowout (Florida 1993), it wasn't a game LSU gave away with stupidity (Auburn 1994), and it wasn't a game LSU just didn't show up for after a big win (Ole Miss 1997).

While it was a painful loss I tried to be positive after, it was an SEC East lose so LSU could still win out and win the West and beat UGA in a rematch in Atlanta. Nope, nope.

As this game ended, and in the context of Lou Tepper being a terrible marriage for LSU, and given Dinardo's stubborn failure to make changes on defensive staff or establish team discipline, I told my son that Dinardo had lost this team and that LSU would not win a single SEC game for the rest of the season. Other than 1/9/12, this was the most hideous LSU loss I can remember.

I STILL get ripped by my UGA buddies over this game. I was cocky about our chances. Not a football season goes by that I don't hear the imitations- "yeah! Bring a true freshman into tiger stadium at night!"
I should've known something was amiss after we have up 400+ to Idaho.

Even in a loss, still one of the loudest I can remember in Tiger Stadium. Certainly was the sign of a huge decline over the next two years.

It's not the 90's, but UAB in 2000 was atrocious. That loss was brutal.

So true, was there as a student and fan for all of the Dinardo years, this might have been a top 5 crowd in that time period.
