This is exactly right... You don't have to be the most talented team if you play smart fundemental football and in year two these players should be totally bought in. I really believe D White will be the LB version of T Mathieu, honestly. They simply need to be a more disiplined defense and the numbers will be the same possibly better as for as TOs. I trust Aranda will have these guys playing good football next year and D White really could be a vocal leader in year two. He's that good and just needs to listen to Aranda pick his brain.

It's a sliding scale. A productive offense keeps the defense off the field, minimizing opportunities for the other team to take advantage of the team's youthfulness.

Another year under Aranda's system.

Idk if it will be better, but I don't expect much of a drop off.

I'm really excited about the 2018 defense.

Worried about DB. Yeah there is talent there, but not at the level of Adams and white.

It will be good simply because of who our coordinator is.

And riley. Riley is by far the biggest surprise of the season. He has played as well as any sec lb.

I think (and it seems most agree) that Riley's explosion onto the scene was due mostly to Aranda. I cannot/do not believe that he was this good in years past and rarely saw the field.

On paper we certainly look a little thin at LB, but Aranda will hopefully continue to work some magic. Thornton and Divinity could very well be the next Riley. White is probably the most talented and gifted player he's ever worked with.
I mean.. Did you see that strip against A&M? It was so boss. Like the A&M player was just like.. there's no point in even fighting this.. He's gonna be good. There could be a drop off the first few games while he's learning the role a little better, but I think we'll get over Beckwith pretty quickly.

Overall though, I don't think the defense will be better. Safety is a concern. Cornerbacks are very talented but they haven't all seemed to have that light bulb come on. Dline should be fantastic. OLB will be very good. ILB remains a question mark but with legitimate reasons for hope.
Not better yardage wise. Perhaps better with pressure and generating turnovers though.

we still have Tolliver II, Donte Jackson, and other breakout upcoming juniors and sophomores

If Travonte Would clean up his attitude and tweak his technique a bit, he would've been a superstar and he still has the potential to.

Tashawn Bower, don't forget John Battle, Savion Smith...must I keep going??

Kristian Fulton, Corey Thompson, Devon White, Corey Thompson, Eric Monroe, Devin Voorhies, Donnie Alexander,

We still have Arden Key also for one more year. And I don't think we lose Lacouture or Frank Herron or Greg Gilmore so we still have them...that;'s all i can think of from the top of head.

So no worries man, it's up to the coaching from here on out obviously

if LoCouture can come back I think the DL will be really stacked. Either way it should be better than last year.

Those 3 plus Logan, Alexander, and Lawrence. Maybe even Valentine gets it together (is he still on the team?)

Tyler Shelvin might be one of those type recruits that can contribute in a big way as a freshmen. Certainly has the size we need in the middle. Then if we land Marvin Wilson, lookout.

Probably not better, but slightly worse or as good will be more than enough.
That being said you never know which of the new starters will end up being a great player, possibly better than who they are replacing

Well yeah, Aranda put riley in positions to succeed but riley was actually the one making the open field tackles and making the plays. Lb a bunch of time comes down to coaching. There is no telling how much better KB AND Riley couldve been had they had Aranda for their entire careers. I have no doubt that he can turn white into a great lb.

Everyone was saying the same things about Bama's defense before this year. Have had close to the same caliber recruiting classes so no reason LSU shouldn't be able to just as well.

Those young and semi inexperienced guys will also be in year 2 of the Aranda era... normal young player miscues, but I think the defense will be solid overall. I would suggest looking at Aranda's D while at Wisky. They weren't near as "talented" as what he has here, but they always were a top 10 unit. Why? Discipline. Aranda's defenses are generally very disciplined and play their role well. This, IMO, will aid the young defense next year. You may not have the few big name stars as you did on D this year (white, Beck, Gochaux, Adams), but without those big names, they still may perform just as well if not better as a complete unit.

How the 2017 LSU defense will be better than 2016? Well, we lose some key players like Jamal Adams, Beckwith, Riley, Lewis Neal and if Goudchaux leaves. However the cupboard is full and will get even better with the 2017 class.

The key is Aranda and his second year to build on his defensive plan. Those guys will be replaced with quality players and re-load as usual. We need to land some quality LB this class and get Buggs/Wilson then we are set. Aranda's defense will be better next year because of the massive talent that I have below and if we get 2-3 recruits.

Remember he lost 8 starters at Wisconsin a few years ago and replaced them with 2-3 stars (far less talent then we have) and his defense was ranked 4th the following year.

2017 Depth Chart:

DE- Rashard Lawrence/Frank Herron/Justin Thomas
NG- Trevonte Valentine/Ed Alexander/Greg Gilmore/Tyler Shelvin
DE- Davon Goudchaux/Glen Logan/Deondre Clark/Neil Farrel

OLB- Arden Key/Sci Martin/Isiah Washington
ILB- Devin White/Donnie Alexander/Devin Voorhies
ILB- Dylon Moses/Michael Divinity/Layton Garnett
OLB- Rahssan Thorton/Andre Anthony/MJ Patterson/Patrick Queen

CB- Kevin Tolliver/Greedy Williams/Cameron Lewis
CB- Donte Jackson/Kristian Fulton/Kary Vincent
F Safety- John Battle/Ed Paris/Jacoby Stevens/Xavier Lewis
S Safety- Savion Smith/Eric Monroe/Grant Delpit

I want to see 3 recruits that we land to make us Dominant now in 2017 and the next 3 years- Marvin Wilson, Dylon Moses and Isiah Buggs and I think we get Moses. We are also much better if Goudchaux comes back. You can plug 2 out of the 3 as starters for sure as Buggs or Wilson can take Lawrence's place as they are that good. But they will all play a lot which will be a nightmare for other teams. If Valentine gets his head straight he finally gives us the solid play we expected and Shelvin and Ed Alexander pass up Gilmore.

Needs 2017

Line Backer: Need to get Moses or Allen plus 2 others to join Patrick Queen in the 2017 class. Want K Love Chiasson and Ignont to join Moses and Queen, which would take care of needs. Allen and Moses of course 2 Baton Rouge boys staying home especially when we need starters and depth at that position.

Def Line: Of course we need to land the big boy from Houston Marvin Wilson to go along with Shelvin. However as for the DE position I am sold on the 2 Bama boys, Neil Farrel and Justin Thomas. Did you guys see their film-WOW!!!! But I want Isiah Buggs and if room Phidarian Mathis

DB: We have Stevens, Vincent, Delpit and Jontre Kirklin (Ath- but will be a DB) all committed with a few other studs we are after like Todd Harris as another hard hitting safety.

I agree Mudd...I think there's a certain DB that's gonna lock quite a few receivers down over the next few years also

Gosh. Getting Godcheaux back would be enormous. Especially if you can land the juco Isaiah Buggs.

It just seems Saivion and Fulton are too talented to not be on the field next season. Fulton looks like he would be fit perfect for the nickel spot and you wonder if they move Saivion to safety and have a Battle and Saivion/Monroe tandem

I love this line up and its exactly what I had except at safety where I had rollover at the other safety position
